Cotto didn't get knocked out ... and he rarely showed hurt ... he was busted up but so was Margarito ... if you don't know homeboy ... the corner threw in the towel
Cotto wasnt starched with one punch. He took a beating to the head, shoulders, ribs, arms, hips, etc. Cotto lost because Margarito woudnt stop throwing punches. It had nothing to with his chin.
I think pretty much everyone who said Margarito could win, based that prediction off Cotto's chin being his biggest vulnerability. If you look at my posts on the fight, pretty much every one will have something about Cotto's chin there. I don't think my point was proven however. Yes, Cotto was stopped but getting stopped by a guy like Margarito is no proof of a weak chin. He took a sustained beating from round 7 onwards. If his chin was so poor, he would have been stopped in the second, seventh, eigth or ninth.
That's all true - but if he had a solid chin like Margarito he would have been able to take it. The point is, the signs were there BEFORE the fight, based on the Corley and Torres fights, that Cotto did not take the greatest shot. I reasoned that he would NOT be able to take the punches from a full-fledged, hard-hitting welterweight like Margarito. Cotto's chin is not glass, but like most fighters, it's not granite either. The Corley and Torres fights showed this. My essential point is this: When somebody hits the canvas, this is a clear sign that they do NOT have great punch resistance. Fans should take notice of this, because it can determine the outcome of future fights!
Decent enough - but dentable. Wouldn't be surprised if either of 'em got stopped, but I wouldn't bet on it either. The official rating I'd give is "average."
The point is still valid however - Brian Mitchell is nothing special. Calzaghe's chin is decent enough, but he can be hurt.
Indeed. I wouldn't exactly have them on par though, considering Pavlik has already been completely on ***** street, and down numerous other times against nobodies in a shorter career.
Joe Frazier was dropped early in his career, twice in the first round. Had that happened today he would be considered a china chinned bum.
