As some may have seen, a while ago i started a thread to make an ESB consensus top100. For several weeks, people have contributed and although everyone, myself included, undoubtedly has some disagreements, the list turned out to be a pretty good one. I've entered these results in an Excel-sheet and used this to generate a ranking system of all eras in the 20th century. The following system has been used: -For each year a fighter has been ranked in the top10 during one era, the era receives a point -That value will be multiplied by a weight factor according to the fighters ranking, since having a top10 fighter in an era counts for more than a top100 fighter. A few polls have been made to see how people rate the value of a top10 fighter compared to a top30 or top100 one. I made an exponential fit for this, resulting in the following formula of weight factor vs ranking, which looks like this: This content is protected By using this formula, the difference between #90 and #70 is not very large, while the difference between #10 and #30 is much bigger. Without further ado, here is the result and how ESB sees the eras according to this dataset: This content is protected The number on the left side are the amount of points scored. As you can see, the 90's did extraordinary well, but the picture is a bit distorted because they got full points for having Foreman and Holmes (both top10 with accordingly high weight factor) being ranked for a few years there, while not being as good as their "top10" worth anymore because of age. On the flipside, the 70's got quite some points from Ali who wasn't that good from '75 on, the 1910's got full points from Johnson who wasn't as great anymore during that era, etc etc. Generate an era-ranking picture with your own ratings: Here is the Excel file available for download: (enter the shown 3-letter code and then wait 45 seconds to download) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AG0KFHQO All you have to do is cut and paste names + their number of years ranked to make your own list. For inserting new fighters, you have to look up these numbers yourself. The graph then changes by itself accordingly. You can also change the weight factor as you please. :good
Bravo, Chris. This is the kind of analysis that approaches objectivity and we should encourage it. I'm spinning around measures and weights to do the same with the greats p4p and come up with a top 10 that can be defended by something other than opinion. This thread is an inspiration.
