He was a great Heavyweight. But he suffered one of the most brutal knockouts I've ever seen in my life from Mercer.
That ko was crazy!! Mercers chin was awesome. Good job from Tommy learning from and coming back from that KO. Only a great could do such a thing.
Morrison brought it every fight. The guy was exciting to watch and that left hook was one of the best in history.
I always wondered what his career would look like if he didn't test positive. What was his full potential?
He pretty much crashed before the positive test anyway. Going to rock concerts and being found passed out on club floors is no way to go about things when you have a fight the next day. Morrison was more a time bomb than even M.Tyson in certain ways. His potential was,he couldve been the best HW of the 90's ,at least in some small time period. Would have really been neck and neck with Tyson at some point,we only saw Morison really 100 % in one top level fight and that was against Foreman and thats bc thats the only fight that scared him ,so i guess he knew he couldnt make mistakes. Either way a sure top level fighter in that era, anyone who thinks otherwise doesnt know what a good fighter is and must look at things with their eyes closed. the guy could fight and be a threat to any fighter .
I know it sounds crazy, but I think Ray had one that was even more brutal than that. They were right to call him "Merciless". This content is protected
Lennox Lewis was the best Heavyweight of the 90's, not Tyson. And no version of Tommy, would beat Lewis.
Oh my god! whoa that was brutal as hell. Wtf was that ref thinking?? But also, wtf was the ref thinking in the Morrison fight?
They must've had either food or cleavage on the brain, because they were waaaayyy too late on the draw realizing what was happening in front of them! That's how guys get killed.
Great documentary! That ref was disgraceful in that fight with Mercer, Tommy could have been killed. I almost forgot about how reckless that ref he was.
His full potential was shown in the Foreman fight like his manager said. He didn't have the discipline outside the ring to ever do what he needed to do but that was a close as he got. Morrison was fun to watch because he either knocked someone out or got KOed himself. I never knew he was getting black out drunk and carried out of bars though. Morrison could fight he was just too undisciplined.
And full credit to Mercer... He ate everything Morrison could throw at him and waited for the tank to empty before coming back in the 4th and stopping him in the 5th. While the KO itself is brutal and is definitely what the fight is remembered most for(and rightfully so) Morrisons combinations were a thing a of beauty here. The right hand to the body, right uppercut, left hook combo that's in any Morrison highlight ever was just sublime.
I didnt mention Lewis. HAD Morrison kept on track it changes the landscape at HW where Tyson and Morrison would fight before Lewis became the dominate era champion. M. Tyson probably knocks Lewis out around the 96 years . Lewis dominated the 90's isnt really relevant to discussing a what if Morrison scenerio, i dont really think Morrison was looking right in either the Ruddock or Lewis fights. Lewis being favored over Morrison at any year would also be irrelevant bc Morrison could have knocked him out...just rewatch the Shannon Briggs fight. I would also say Lewis looked at his best vs Morrison . In fact style wise Morrison and tyson would be by far the biggest threats to lewis had they both stayed on track.
Same referee for Cooney-Norton, Tua-Ruiz, Mike Spinks-Mustapha Wassaja and a host of other savage KO's where Tony Perez didn't step in and stop it. He was also the referee for the Billy Collins-Luis Resto fight....
