ESPN : Andre Ward vs. Kelly Pavlik being discussed for February on HBO.

I had a thread a while back about this because it was the only 'big' fight out there they way others at 168 were pairing up. Maybe Kelly can get his homey Darnell to spar for this fight.

Huge Pavlik fan here. When he beat Zartuche, I thought "That was awesome, and now he gets a shot at #1 Miranda. No way in hell he can win, but he gets to fight on the big stage."
When Kelly beat the **** out of Miranda, I thought " WOW!! Now that was impressive! Now he gets to fight Taylor for the world title! No way in HELL he can win, but he gets to fight for a world title on HBO, and thats just awesom!"
He of course beat Jermaine, and a downward spiral followed shortly after, as we all know.
I have to say it again...NO WAY IN HELL HE BEATS ANDRE WARD. It will not be competitive at all,if the fight even goes off. I cant imagine how I could possibly be wrong this time. Ward is a weight class, and a skills class, above any decent fighter Kelly has ever beaten, even at his best. Clearly, Kelly is no longer at his best either. Even if he was, it most likely wouldn't matter.

 

A fight with Ward might be what Kelly needs to get motivated. Would be a tough fight, but I think Kelly might clean up and come in to that fight in as good of shape as he has been in since the first Taylor fight.

He could take other easier fights, but he mise well go for it at this point. If he made the fight close he would have done better then anyone else. If he even won a round it would not look bad compared to what other guys have done against Ward. And if Pavlik actually knocked Ward out he would be vaulted back into superstardom.

 

I'm surprised if Pavlik takes this fight since he ducked a fight with Froch for November.

 

Not thrilled about this really. For either guy. For Pavlik's angle, he's probably going to lose wide if not get stopped. His chances aren't good here.

There really isn't anything for Ward atm at smw, he may be better off doing 1 of 3 things......1) Move up to lhw and take on either Cloud or Pascal. 2) Take either Froch or Kessler in a rematch while Pavlik and Chavez work out their differences for the right to fight.

people will ***** about this fight but it's a decent matchup. ward should win a wide decision. there's not many good fights out there for ward right now. i'm sure 20 yrs from now on these boards, i'll be informed of how many british super middles that ward ducked and that he shouldn't be considered great.

That is a terrible comparison. Pavlik has always been a 1-dimensional fighter with very limited boxing skills. Pavlik style is more similar to Trinidad than Cotto. Unfortunately, he didn't take his career as seriously, and therefore never reached is potential.

 

Ward's style is bad for Pavlik. Pavlik should fight Froch or Abraham..

 

Why is Ward even fighting Pavlik? Pavlik is done and is a drunk, shot to ****, fighter. Or will he be unshot, rejuvenated and prime once more that now he is considered to be fight Ward?
