http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3150700 Actually, I guess it is an AP article that ESPN is running. In any case, I'm a bit dismayed by the god-awful reporting in this. "Taylor was a heavy favorite in the last fight after two decisions over Bernard Hopkins and wins over Kassim Ouma and Cory Spinks. Even though Pavlik was 31-0 with 28 knockouts heading into their WBC and WBO title bout, he was not considered as strong a contender as some of Taylor's previous victims." Um, he was an ever so slight favorite, and I think its safe to say he was considered stronger than Cory Spinks. "But Pavlik not only got up, but he also carried the fight to Taylor until, in the seventh round, a massive right landed squarely on Taylor's chin and knocked out the champ." This makes it sound like it was a one-punch knockout. Anyway, they had some good quotes in the article otherwise but some of the amateurish writing (quoted above) is annoying. I guess thats why I come here
I had the fight scored same way as the judges before the KO with taylor ahead by 3 points. Although, I thought Kelly's jab was starting to get really effective.
I'm not sure if Pavlik can win this one again. I hope so, because watching Tyalor fight can be pretty boring. I think Jermain will be way more motivated this time. So many great fight coming up in 2008!
Yep. I don't understand why people say Jermain will "be more motivated this time". Are you kidding me? Was he not motivated at all for the last fight after going to Mannys Pocono training facility? I agree he will be very motivated, but he was last time too
I think he was underestimating Pavlik, thought he fought the best and Kelly can't touch him. KO. I'm not saying JT is the favorite, I'm saying that KP was down and almost out in the first fight. Sure, he adjusted which speaks volumes about his talent but it was a close fight nonetheless. I wouldn't write JT off just yet.
I do not think Taylor underestimated Pavlik. I think he trained like a mother, had a game plan, and once the fight began and he got hit a couple of times the game plan was forgotten, not on purpose but literally forgotton. Some guys are calm under pressure (Mayweather, Pavlik), others like Taylor have brain freeze and go on autopilot. I see Taylor having a good plan going in next time, and then when he gets hit again, he'll revert to his old self or just go into survival mode. Pavlik, will fight with a plan, make deliberate adjustments as needed, and KO Taylor again.
I wouldn't be shocked if this is like one of those disappointing rematches where the guy who won by ko wins easier the second time. it' like the person who was ko'd is hit hard and then loses it, has to be tough to get back in the ring with someone who cleaned your clock. then again maybe taylor keeps pavlik down unlike the first fight.
I think this will be a disappoint fight, because I think Taylor will fight scared this time and try and box with Pavlik like he did guys like Spinks, Wright, and Hopkins. He's not gonna want to open up like he did in the first fight. Don't expect fireworks this time. Expect Taylor in his shell losing a boring decision.
true. Odds on Taylor were about 5/6, almost even When they say that Pavlik not only got up, but also carried the fight to Taylor, I don't see how it sounds like it was a one punch knockout :huh
I agree that JT may "fight scared. I don't think that fighting scared would result in a boring decision. I have seen Pavlik fight 6 times, and IMO, figthing scared against him would be the absolute worst thing an opponent could do. If an opponent was not firing back hot and heavy, Kelly would be moving forward throwing the double jab, and brutal combinations along with the occasional lead right. He has enough fire power to split the guard of just about anybody at 160 or 168. He also has enough power to damage a guys arms and shoulders if he goes into a defensive shell. Et, et. JT fighting scared gets blown out in less than 3 rounds. Boo
