I got a phone call from a sales guy at ESPN uk, who wanted me to sign up for them because I used to get Setanta over freeview. When I asked him about their boxing coverage he said: "we're showing interviews with fighters and classic material for the next few months, but we've got big contracts in the pipeline that should be signed over the next 2-3 months". He then tried to blag me into signing up now and canceling later if good fights didn't materialize, but I gave that a miss. Does anyone know what sort of deals they're working on? Would be interesting to see if any good stuff ends up being shown, or if that was just sales patter.
Sounds like sales patter. Not to say that they aren't looking at deals but I would guess the guy on the phone has no clue what they are considering broadcasting
Yeah really i doubt the guy on the phone is in the loop on contract talk I read they are in on a few contracts as well was on here months ago but nothing major is happening.
Sadly they don't be seem to be showing fights - they have man wrestling though.:? I signed up for the footy, after losing Setanta - United v Spurs this week.
i got a similar call, i seemed to know more about what they offered then the plonker who phoned me up and wasted my time. i told him i will only sub when they have a dedicated commitment to live boxing and particularly overseas cards, his responce was, well we have ufc, i told the muppet to **** off. they really think ufc and boxing is one of the same and everyone is on a perverse blood lust and boxing fans will be satisfied with gay porn with blood.
When they call simply ask them a question about boxing: Do you plan to show Huck's next fight? What about David Price? Will you have Mosley's next fight? Your contacts have been sold, so make 'em work for their jobs!! Adios.
do you think espn have an interest in signing a british promoter and showing live boxing at a peak time
look at spencer fearons last show with choi...i wasnt there, but i think someone like espn are missing a trick not showing nights like that...it may not be world title boxing, but there are so many world titles i dont think thats too much of an issue....and looking at the atmosphere at that choi show spencer put on, i think all sports fans would stop and watch and enjoy that.
That would be a terrific start. They do show showtime events now and again and if espn uk showed this tournament in whole and live they would get a lot of respect, fans and subscriptions I suspect.
Everyone seems to be forgetting the interview that the honcho from ESPN gave a few weeks ago. He said they are in negatiations over boxing and hope to make announcements soon. He also said they will definately not be signing contracts with any more MMA factions. Read into that what you will. I feel very positive about it all to be honest. Give them a chance- they've only been up and running a month or so! ESPN have got cosey with Top Rank again in America and we all know that the Top Rank UK deal is up for grabs as well. Don't rule ESPN out yet, fellas:good.
