Jack Demspey, Verdict: "A mistmach, with the old Manassa Mauler being confused, outsmarted, outboxed and outclassed."

Joe Louis, Verdict: "Ali in a gruelling fight."

Rocky Marciano, Verdict: "Ali on points or by late stoppage."

Mike Tyson, Verdict: "Ali on points or by late stoppage."

Lennox Lewis, Verdcit: "Lewis on points in a tactical fight without many thrills."

What do you think? Is he fair, overall?

Dempseys speed would make the fight so it wasn't a mismatch. I don't see Lewis beating him, and Ali doesn't stop Rocky late unless it's by cuts.

The only men I consider worthy of a potential clash with Ali, with a resemblance of interst would be:

Ali vs Dempsey... after 4 rounds of ineffective/unlanded blows to the jaw of Ali, the match is called to a halt with Dempsey on his knees, having succumbed to a third knock down form the right of Ali.

Ali vs Tunney.. the match was made for the nimble footed Clay of 65-67.. With no purpose, or reason to close the fight early, Tunneys suffers numerous facial cuts via the left jab of Ali.. His trainers end the bout to save a degree of nostalgia. KO. 6

Ali vs Louis.. The Ali Jab, flashy uppercuts leave Joe off balance too often.. Ever the patient man, Joe takes his time, losing round after round. A hook catches Clay on the ropes... down for the count of 8... Learning in every fight, Ali uses his feet to pick Joe off at will... The dancing skills, fast jab and upperbody sways keep Joe mystified.. With respect, Ali cruises to a UD..over 15 rounds

Ali vs Marciano.. A fight for the ultimate crown... With the speed of Ali, Marciano is caught flat footed.. as most CLAY opponents... Rock does his all to bully the man, alas, finds himself the recipient of lightening hooks and uppercuts.. the speed and power of which, he has not experienced.. After 8 rounds, the ROCK is a bloody mess.... more cuts than a butcher shop..

Ali vs tyson.. The adrenillin burns in Tyson from the offset... The game plan is as expected.. a welcoming ALi in the middle of the ring.. Ali sways much.. Tyson absorbing the physical movements of Ali. ... No need for Tyson to reexamine his game plan.. After several lost uppercuts, Ali speaks into the ear of Tyson.."you dont even hit as hard as Foremans mum.. You never faught George.. too scared.... " Tyson is infuriated.. Perfect to fit the Ali fight plan..... Swing, swing, swing, swing, swing.... Over another 4 rounds, Tyson turns to the corner for support.. The weakening of the man.. Once again, Tyson beat himself, via the self questioning ability..

A very far fetched point of view... I just let my imagination run wild..

I really respect Lennox Lewis but to think that he would beat Muhammad Ali is to not respect the greatest of all time. Lennox would not have a chance and would just be beaten to the punch every time.

Agreed. It's just a ludicrous prediction. Ali of 66-68 would show Lewis so many angles and so much speed his head would spin. He also put some punches Lewis didn't see (the most dangerous kind) on that fragile chin.

Ali is the greatest, but head to head he is vastly OVERRATED.

Predator... its seems to hard to question.. Ali always seemed to dance so much better agianst the GIANTS... leaving them incorrectly balanced.. unable to dominate him.. I think Lewis would have been inferior... and I doubt Lewis would sustain the ridicule, chasing, body shots and determination of Ali to get the better, on any day.... Lennox was a great man.... well fitting into the top 15 H/W of all time.. in my view..

If you read the article, that seems to be his position.

I will read this in detail when I get a chance, but off what you printed,
yes, this is a fair take in my judgement. Ali would probably be too big for Marciano. The Louis fight would be close one way or the other.

I think Lennox Lewis should be favored over anyone head to head.

Ali would be too fast of hand & foot for Lewis.

I wouldnt even like to bet on Lewis vs the 70s Ali never mind the prime version of 66/67 & I assume we are talking primes when these mythical matches are being discussed ?

ESPN have already shown their stupidity by making that top 50 list were they had Barrera ahead of Whitaker so I dont take much notice of their opinion.

Prime Ali would make Lewis miss at will & sting him with sharp counters all night long & thats only when Ali isnt making him look slow & clumsey by giving him constant side to side lateral movement.

Another thing - they said `without any thrills` but yet they expect Lewis to outpoint Ali, nobody in their right mind can imagine Ali just casually boxing along losing the fight & not making something happen, he would kick it up a gear or 2 & at least make the fight exciting if he were losing. ESPN are out of their tiny minds IMO.

I think the one where the authour is really far wide of the mark is with Dempsey. I dont think that Dempsey could be considered mismatched against anybody and I think the authour buys into a lot of popular misconceptions about him.

The other wildcard is the Ali Lewis fight where neither fighters oponents provide a good template for the other. I would certainly be verry wary of picking Lewis however.

The other scenarios are all plausible in my eyes though much of the analsis behind them is misguided.

Janitor.. Im no author.. although I would doubt very much, in any season, Dempsey would have contended with the combined foot work, athleticism, timing, ring crafts, playfulness and finishing ability of Ali.......

Think hard to yourself... Dempsey/Foreman...Dempsey/Liston... Dempsey/Frazier.....
