That has something to do with Miguel Berchelt being a far more technically skilled boxer than Roman. Miura, Sanguilan and Salido are blood and guts warriors as well, that's in Mickey's wheelhouse, Berchelt isn't. But guess what, he was still timing him, and countering over his jab landing massive overhands, punching with Berchelt, and occasionally working behind his jab, its just that Berchelt was faster, younger and heavier handed, so that kind of means, he's better than your average brawler doesn't it? And also kind of means he doesn't suck as a boxer.

Berchelt impressed me tonight. I haven't really been following him, but I think I might after tonight. I'd like to see him fight Loma.

Sure Roman's savvy enough to manage occasional success jabbing with Berchelt and timing him a bit as you say. But it's relative, and for a world class boxer his technique and especially his defence is glaringly poor. Roman's slow, throws wide punches, and stands square in front of his opponent. It's obvious that he wasn't going to have the chances against the faster, longer, better Berchelt he had against previous opponents who were more similar to him.

But I came away thinking less of Berchelt tonight because he looked worse than he did against Vargas, Miura, even Barros, despite Roman being more limited than them. Vargas at least was a pretty good outside boxer and Miura a southpaw with a tight guard. Berchelt against a guy he could potshot easily was still lunging in with his head exposed and his body upright so often. And he didn't use his movement as well as he did against Miura. I'm not going to give all the credit to Roman for landing as much as he did, he landed because Berchelt was there to be hit too much. He has good legs but when he stops to punch he reaches with his punches, and on the inside he barely moves his head nor does he uses he hands to protect himself too well. Berchelt has defensive liabilities and balance deficiencies Tank, Machado, even Farmer could easily take advantage of.

I need to see Berchelt matched against a boxer before I favour him against Davis, Farmer, or Machado. Heck I think Marriaga would give him a difficult match, and though he should win we should learn more about him. If Berchelt's going to feast on brawlers (ok, boxer-brawlers) he should be able to refine his game and look better against them than he did tonight.

Maybe I saw the Vargas fight. But yeah, I don't see everything.

Even though he lost, Roman showed a tremendous heart. He is a true warrior. :chuck:

Berchelt is a beast, but honestly, he disapointed me a bit. I already knew he was a beast, but I thought his boxing IQ was higher. Román only brought one problem to the table, "the right hand over berchelt's left jab". This problem is more or less easy to solve to any high IQ fighter, and berchelt couldnt do it. You have to be mad not to be a fan of berchelt, but I wish he had a bit higher IQ in the ring, he would be unstopable. Román showed that berchelt is winable, not easily ofc, and to win you will have to pay a BIG toll, but he can be won.
