See Link: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3416740 That's a very good sign right there. Other than some reservation that he expresses at the end about the Mexican promoters possibly holding things up, I take a lot of positive things away from this. Montiel is noticeably roused by the recent talks that Mijares is the man in the division after most publications rated him as the best 115 pounder. That's a healthy attitude to have and he wants to settle the issue. Furthermore, beyond just wanting Mijares, he demonstrates his desire to fight the best and most exciting, as well, e.g., Donaire and Arce. Let's hope this gets done.
good article, thanks i hope Arce does not get his wish to fight Vasquez. Other title holders in the division are eager to unify
I love a throwback fighters mentality, out to prove they are the best by fighting the best. I hope the bout happens, winner gets a cemented p4p top 10 rating. Mijares is going to be a nightmare for Montiel stylistically though.
fantastic fight. Montiel has some nice tricks up his sleeve though. I think he is a little bit more adaptable than most people give him credit for. He has some sinister feints and some nice speed on his punches....and a really really...really big head.
It'll happen, funny that late last year everybody was criticising Mijares for 'weak opposition', when he's now stepping in with top calibre in the division and plans to become undisputed. I guess they don't understand the concept of risk/reward. Now Mijares is the WBC/WBA champion, having dominated Munoz like he was a lower level contender and that means that the Montiel's of the world have to fight him if they want to be considered the best for more financial oppurtunities. I'm sure the Arce bout scared several prospective opponents off, seeing as how bad Mijares beat him.
The great thing about the lower division is that the top fighters don't have any choice but to fight each other, if they want to make any money at all. That's why we'll probably see Vasquez/Marquez IV, although I don't really want that fight. But Montiel would be the best opponent Mijares has faced, although I'd expect Mijares to be too skilled for him.
I'd expect Mijares to dominate him, judging by what I saw against Munoz, which was a relatively relaxed performance at that. But I do worry about these scorecards, it's ridiculous. Mijares has to win 9 rounds or more just to get a close SD from these judges.
0i got Montiel by KO. Mijares is riding on a streak beating slow/ somewhat overrated 115's. Montiel is the real deal. This is the fight where if it's true- Mijares is that good he should beat Montiel. I think Montiel will have Mijares exposed.
