ESPN2 FNF: Brandon Adams vs. Willie Monroe Jr. & Petr Petrov vs. Fernando Carcamo RBR

Yeah, very surprising. Maybe Carcamo should consider moving up in weight. That was an abysmal performance on his part.

 

Wouldnt surprise me if Artie got Monroe in with a Johnson or Lemieux level guy who can bang some before the end of the year to check his chin a bit, and if he survived try to find a real shot for him in 2015.

 

Aside from Joel Diaz being an idiot for letting his guy take so much punishment, this tourney was pretty damn awesome in my opinion! Hopefully, ESPN does another one in the future.

 

I thoroughly enjoyed it. To me one of the most exciting aspects of the sport is seeing who might be "that next guy". The MW tourney in particular I though showed some guys who might turn into solid names at some point.

 

Yeah, I agree 100% w/ you. Even the 'loser' Adams will benefit from this. I know I'd like to see him again. And it was nice to see the good sportsmanship between him and Monroe. Great stuff all around!

This is what Dan Rafael said in his chat earlier today :

 

I scored tonight's ESPN main event huge for Petrov through 7 rounds, 7-0 rounds, 70-63 points. In the 1st, both fighters were very cautious and kept their distance, but in the last minute of the round Petrov landed three left hooks to the head and one to the body to win the round. In the 2nd, Petrov kept circling to his left, staying closer to Carcamo than he did in the 1st, landing a number of left hooks to the head and body, mixed with some rights to the body. In the 3rd, Petrov started moving in-and-out, then later resumed circling to his left, all while landing a number of left hooks to the head and body, with occasional rights to the head when inside. In the 4th, Petrov landed two right uppercuts in the first minute, then later a nice 2-shot combo to the body, and then in the last minute, he landed a number of left hooks to the head and body, plus another nice uppercut. In the 5th and 6th rounds, Petrov kept moving in-and-out, maintaining a steady workrate throughout, mostly combination left hooks to the head and body; in the 5th, he mixed in occasional straight rights to the head, but in the 6th he started throwing and landing many more straight right hands, including a number of lead rights. In the 7th he was a bit less active, throwing mostly right hands, with occasional body shots and then a few left hooks; with 25 seconds left in the round he landed a huge right hand that rocked Carcamo for the first time in the fight, and then he landed a huge left-right combo at the bell that rocked Carcamo again. The fight should have been stopped after the 7th, as Carcamo was clearly finished, but while his corner threatened to stop it, they still sent him out for the 8th, and so Petrov threw a few potshots and then a final left-right to the head that buzzed Carcamo, leading the referee to belatedly jump in a few seconds later to stop the fight.

I thought Teddy Atlas' commentary for this fight was spot on. He noted how both fighters came into the fight looking dry and thus fighting cautiously in the 1st round. He noted in the early rounds how Petrov kept circling to his left, away from Carcamo's powerful left hand, which also helped set up his left hooks to the head and body, and he credited Petrov's trainer Daniel Zamora for preparing his fighter well. As the fight wore on and Petrov dominated, he then noted how Carcamo had stayed dry and not looked his typical self, and suggested (though did not confirm) that Carcamo had had significant trouble making weight. Whether or not that was the reason, Carcamo was terrible in this fight. He fought at a stodgy pace, had a low workrate, never got his jab going despite his 5-inch height advantage (though the reaches were nearly identical), and most of his punches to the head were wild looping shots that missed badly. Carcamo's best work in the fight was to the body, mostly left hooks, with a few banging rights while in clinches, but it was nowhere near enough to be competitive. Carcamo's footwork was also terrible; Petrov worked the ring entirely on his own terms, and Carcamo looked less stable as the fight went on, particularly a sequence in the first minute of the 7th when he alternated every few seconds between orthodox, square, and southpaw stances.

Congratulations to Petrov on his well deserved Boxcino lightweight tournament victory. Given his significant ring experience, his performances in this tournament, and his age of 31, I agree with Atlas that he should now be moved pretty quickly, certainly at least a Top 10-15 opponent next time out (Carcamo is currently ranked #20 at lightweight by BoxRec). Given the current state of the lightweight division, if Petrov can further build on his momentum, he should be in the mix for a world title shot fairly soon.

 

I thought petrov looked great, I realize carcamo was a shell of himself, but petrol puts together some good combos. I think he deserves a slot on a hbo sho undercard.

 

Petrov appears to be a really good fighter..................Monroe was boring as hell...............
