ESPN2 Saturday Night Fights 8/28 @ 9pm EST: Omri Lowther vs. Henry Lundy RBR

...not exactly.

The season finale of "Friday Night Fights" was headlined by Chris Arreola vs. Manuel Quezada.

This is a "boxing special presentation on ESPN2".

Also, it was supposed to be Omri Lowther versus household name Edner Cherry. Hank ****ing Lundy was a four-days-notice substitute.

 

Sam Vargas is 4-0 (1) up against Michael Springer - 7-6-1 (3) - in a 4-rounder at welterweight.

Round 1

Springer throwing wide punches that leave his arm behind Vargas and able to clinch. Vargas tries to unload with short volleys on the way in knowing Springer is looking to wrap him up. Springer gets a 1-2 in as Vargas wades in carelessly. They clinch very frequently, with Springer fighting very negatively, and Vargas works his free right hand (or left as the case may be) on the inside. Springer throws a hail-mary right hand and falls into a clinch after missing. Springer double jabs from across the ring and runs headlong into Vargas, pushing him back to the ropes with the top of his head driving into his chest. One ugly round in the books.

10-9 Vargas

 

Round 2

Vargas again takes a right hand while working without a hand in front of his stationery face. He volleys but gets tied up easily. Springer is rattled every time Vargas strings a couple of good shots together but is aware enough to throw a wet blanket over him whenever he gets any momentum going. Vargas hurts him especially bad with one forward-thrusting combo and Springer staggers into the ropes and should have been ruled knocked down before throwing his arms around Vargas. Springer throws a crazy cat-like jab from way too far out and is countered as he falls in to grab during/after the miss. Vargas is content to tap him on the body while being held.

20-18 Vargas

 

These are more like some kind open-faced cashew butter affair. On rye. :barf

"From what I understand from watching cartoons, you don't want to move in quicksand. You want to kinda stand there until somebody saves you."

 

Round 3

Springer is forcing the airtight inside fight again. Vargas isn't countering before the clinches anymore, just grabbing on with one arm and punching with the other but actually getting outworked. A round off for the prospect to suck some air?

Atlas is killing it tonight!

"Right now, I'm cheering for quicksand."

 

Yeah! Yeah!

 

Round 4

Springer flings himself across the ring with a gorilla-armed 1-2. Vargas is literally reaching out to time his rushes and initiate the grabs himself, and getting hit due to his lack of countering. Springer is clobbering him with sloppy right hands and then holding and hammering. Vargas gets his jab working after a separation and starts trying to flash it in Springer's face. Springer is taking a leap of faith every time Vargas starts to shuffle and jab his way, landing his chin on Vargas' shoulder and squeezing tight. Another right hand bangs on the chin of Vargas as they crash together. Somebody (indeterminate who from the angle) lands a low blow and the crowd boos. Springer is now running and hooking at Vargas as he gives chase across the ring.

That was an awfully negative performance by Springer, yet he managed to make it effective due to Vargas' lack of effort in making things positive.

DRAW!

 

The funniest thing about that was how excited Joe got. You could see the next words forming on the tip of his tongue:

"I have it on blu-ray! Let's watch it tonight after we wrap! I've got this great Shiraz I've been waiting for the right occasion to open...we can curl up on the couch and make fun of BK...wait, BK, you're not on standby are you?"

 

Wtf is with the silly Disney music accompanying the around-the-city footage?

Is Montreal inhabited by cel animations of frolicking blue squirrels? :blood
