Defeo is trotting away, putting out a defensive right jab, ducking away, weaving side to side with plenty of space between them, mostly just pantomiming slickness and not really getting close enough to slip a real punch. Aton is walking him down, headhunting and missing but grabbing Defeo into a violent shaking clinch, slamming him into the ropes and landing several vicious body shots.

Defeo is rowing out a soft right jab, measuring with it, range-finding, not actually snapping it, just keeping tabs on Aton's whereabouts, making sure he isn't close enough to whack him on the body or with any guard-dissolving right hands. Defeo is pawing the air, stepping carefully on eggshells around the ring. Aton is getting a piece of the body where he can but essentially no clean action to speak of this round.

Defeo is backed into a corner, heavy chopping rights from Aton. Counter left from Defeo, blasting his way to freedom desperately. Aton is coming forward, knifing the jab out from his chest, tossed like a frisbee. Leaping right hook from Defeo, getting bold. Aton keeps on the march, cutting the ring off, working the body. Cuffing left hook by Aton when Defeo is ducking and backing straight up with his legs almost crossing awkwardly to put him in a bad spot. Defeo lucky Aton was a twat hair slow on that one. Aton BASHES Defeo across the face with an axing right hand a few moments before the bell, and Defeo instinctively reaches out behind himself to feel for the canvas with his glove, but miraculously somehow it doesn't touch as he steadies himself.

Round 6

Defeo is getting spiked like a railroad fastener with the right hand, Aton just walking up and pounding him over & over until they either tumble into the ropes together or Defeo clinches and spins him. Pause, ref checks tape on Defeo's glove. Time in. Aton is wrecking the body, wide slaps, uppercuts. Defeo has spun him against the ropes, however, and is working his own heavy body shots and some overhands bombing away on the chin! Aton seems uncomfortable with the tables turned and his back on the ropes! SEVERAL shots landed for Defeo, finishing very strong, might've stolen a moral victory round.

I agree with the commentators, how the hell do you have that match split by only a single point? In other words, had Aton not scored a knockdown that judge would have ruled it a draw. (or hell, for all we know given Defeo the round in which he got dropped and had Defeo winning!)

Damn...kinda want to stay up to see if Blader can spring the million to one upset over weight bully Sonsona...but also, I know he won't, career featherweight, 8 kayos in 52 contests...foregone conclusion here. But still, crazy things happen in boxing and I'd hate to miss Sonsona getting embarrassed..

Marvin Doecadez Sonsona vs. Samsul Maarif, 8 rounds @ whateverweight

 

Sonsona was also stripped of his WBO super flyweight title all the way back in 2009 (in the draw with Alejandro Hernandez) when he missed weight by 2½lbs.

That may not sound like much to fans of the higher weights, but in the lower range that's a ton.

 

Round 1

Sonsona is digging hard right hooks into the body, exploiting his reach advantage. Maarif is cautious, holding up a high guard, inadvertently giving Sonsona exactly what he wants, a clear space to land beneath the elbows on the flanks. Combo up top by Maarif blocked, Sonsona countering with right jabs on the bridge of the nose. Sonsona ties up and then shoves Maarif away like a large heavenly body shrugging off a small asteroid that entered its orbit. Sonsona imposing his size & will on Maarif, now showboating a bit, standing in front of him with both hands down and flicking up potshot right jabs.

Sonsona is stepping in, jamming his right forearm into Maarif's face or hooking the body and stepping out. Maarif is managing to catch him with orthodox 1-2s on the way in & out. Sonsona is toying with him, fighting lazily on the outside and from mid-range, bowling in left uppercuts on the body and just dabbing at the air with his jab like Bob Ross wielding a paintbrush. Maarif is scoring looping right hands on the jaw, not hurting Sonsona but scoring on him when he gets arrogant neglecting his defense.

Sonsona is reaching in, poking Maarif in the forehead with his needling right jab and letting the low tide carry him out. Sonsona is lackadaisically stepping in, flurrying, then sinking into a crouch on the outside. Nothing coming back from Maarif, just blocking as much as he can and tying up on occasion. Sonsona is locating the head of Maarif with the jab snuck behind the guard, then stepping back and blocking a Maarif 1-2 surging forward. Sonsona casually stretches out and pokes a body jab.
