It's a great list, but "pretentious" comes to mind a little. It's like one of those favorite films lists someone makes with a bunch of independent and foreign films listed. Although favorite and best aren't the same. Guys like Fitzsimmons feel a bit high, as does Langford as #1. Moore, Louis, and Duran feel a hair low. Obviously a top-notch list... better than what I could do.
Smitty we're in need of a great list. Could you post your top 20? I remember being most impressed with it, and thinking it was the best list produced on this fine site.
Mcgrain how can u not have Ali in your top 5? That's ****en pathetic. Ali was a dominant ****en heavyweight who beat about everyone in his era which everybody considers the strongest heavyweight division ever, right behind the 2000's heavyweight era. Wladimir number 1 GOAT. Chavez is no where ****en close to top 10. Chavez is top 30-35.
Thanks, McGrain's list IS pretty impressive and not to far off my own barring inclusion of McLarnin and Canzoneri. ESPN's list however is totally in left field compared to ours. If i'm not mistaken this is how I had mine (exclusion of pics and description). 1a. Ray Robinson 1b. Harry Greb 2. Sam Langford 3. Henry Armstrong 4. Bob Fitzsimmons 5. Ezzard Charles 6. Willie Pep 7. Benny Leonard 8. Roberto Duran 9. Mickey Walker 10. Muhammad Ali 11. Barney Ross 12. Archie Moore 13. Ray Leonard 14. Joe Gans 15. Charley Burley 16. Pernell Whitaker 17. Joe Louis 18. Gene Tunney 19. Tommy Loughran 20. Sandy Saddler :good
Good list P4P,but I woulkd list Dempsey @190lbs way up there and my man Joe Louis in the top five also...They were to me the two best punchers at their respective peaks...Good list overall...
Dempsey was not a better puncher than Mike Tyson. I don't think Dempsey was a better puncher than Liston, Marciano, or Foreman either. I think you overrate Dempsey attempting to pin him on the same level as Louis.
