**** them and all the fools who rush to that shitty rocky statue they put up, is his gym closed down now
:blood What's next, JC? You gonna tell me most of my personas are based on infinite combinations of Latka, Borat, Balki and the Coneheads?
In defense of the Rocky statue. It basically exists because it's a movie prop. That's the one thing people miss when they point to that, not that Joe doesn't deserve more love.
Man all he wanted was alittle recognition at least from his hometown and I've been saying it for yrs Frazier deserved one. I love Rocky, but they should of put the real thing the real son of Philly. Like someone else said better late than never, but it still pissing alot of people off and it's bittersweet.
'Bout ****in time. These people worship a fictional boxer, but have to wait until a real warrior dies to show him some respect? GTFOH.
Yeah, I was aware that it was a movie prop, Pete. But it was also an unintentional piece of mockery, under the circumstances. It's not as if people are bitter because they dislike the Rocky statue, in and of itself, you know.
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A statue honoring late boxing great Joe Frazier is going up soon. Many say it’s a long overdue tribute to a Philadelphia sports icon. “These are the gloves that Joe wore when he fought Oscar Bonavano,” said Joe Hand, Sr. The walls of Hand’s office is Joe Frazier museum. He was business partners with the heavy weight champion end even helped him buy the gym where he trained so many promising boxers in North Philadelphia. It’s now a furniture store and with Frazier’s name slowly fading from the façade. “It hurts a little bit,” said Hand. Something that also bothered Hand was that Frazier never had a statue honoring him in his adopted home of Philadelphia, but someone else did – Rocky. Last January Hand promised he would personally make it happen within a year. He began raising money and meeting with sculptors, but the project has since been taken over by Frazier’s family and the city. There is talk of placing it in the Sports Complex by the Xfinity live building. “Philadelphia should be very very proud of him,” said Hand. More information about the statue and how you can donate money should be released a little later on this week. http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2012/09/05/statue-honoring-boxing-champion-joe-frazier-in-progress/ ____________________________________________________________ Tyson makes a point at the end..... 1:40 [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmXgrQ799vw[/ame]
Well it would have been nice if Joe could have seen it stand, and feel the love the city of Philadelphia still has for him, as Mr. Fraizer always seemed like a gentleman who felt like he never truly received the respect he damn well earned. However, it is a nice tribute to a true legend and all time great, that the city and future generations of his family can enjoy forever. Still, it is somewhat frustrating that a fighter as recent as Oscar De La Hoya can have a statue built in his hometown, in his honor, when he was still active, but Smokin' Joe doesn't get considered for such a honor until after he passes away. :-(
anyone see the documentary about joe and his son marvis running their gym, good intentions but god awful businessmen. Marvis idea to save the gym was to build an amphitheatre behind the gym :huh
