I noticed that he isn't already in which suprised me somewhat. I understand some things happened unrelated to his actual boxing itself. Question is that the reason the IBOF hasn't voted him in? Should he get in based on his ring accomplishments? If he hadn't shared the same era as perhaps the greatest 135lber would he be looked at in a better light? Or worse?
He should be there for sure, some say he wasn’t ATG but I disagree, his only really weakness was that he was a bit on the small side for a lightweight, he could do everything in his prime, he could be called mantequilla if there wasn’t already a napoles, and only lost to the very best. I think he’d be viewed about the same strangely enough, the Durán win elevates him, yet without Duran he could have had a pretty dominant reign. The first 4 rounds of Duran - Dejesus 2 has some of the best boxing you’re ever going to see
Well, let's all just remember that the name 'Jesus,' that part, is like, one of the-if not the-biggest hall of fame name for all of planet Earth. That's not nothing.
Pretty good champion in his own right. Only lost to bigger guys and Duran himself, apart from Gomez, a decision in Venezuela. Beat some good contenders. As has been said, lesser fighters are already there
I think DeJesus was already 40-1 before he fought Duran. He did win a version of the lightweight title.
No one wants to admit it, but only reason DeJesus never made the Hall is because he shot a young man to death (while high on angel dust). I truly think that incident kept him out. Monzon was a murderer too, but Monzon was simply too great to keep out. If not for DeJesus's murder charge, I think he'd have been in the Hall many, many years ago. That's my theory at least.
Hall of fame talent without question but I think he falls in that category of guys like Kalambay, Quartey, Kessler, Maske etc. Guys that were every bit as good as the best of their era but maybe didn't win as many titles or didn't completely live up to their level of talent. DeJesus was certainly better than a lot of guys that have made it to the hall of fame.
