Gregory Benitez, had two of themost talented boxers ever to come from Puerto Rico under his tutelage...Wilfred Benitez and Esteban Vita de Jesus... We all know Wilfred's talents and boxing skills that could have been put to better use if only Wilfred enjoyed training....I am proud to call Wilfred my friend and help him everyway I can...It is sad to talk to him over the phone, as a shadow of what he once was...it is ahrd to understand him and his memory is good, except when you talk boxing with him.... He was defeated by the ATG's during his career but he also beat some, the youngest champion ever at 17 years old, dominating the legendary Kid Pambele that did not lose a fight for 4 years previous to facing Wilfred...He was poetry when boxing at this best... Esteban de Jesus, yet another sad case...yet another gret talent that had all the attributes except the willing to train...Esteban was a contemporary of the best LW of all time, Roberto Duran, when he face Duran on a non-title fight in MSG, he drop Duran for the first time ever in the first round givin Duran a boxing lesson ....to a man that was a master boxer....I saw Esteban De Jesus first fight in PR after he defeated Duran, it was against the perenial contender Ray Lampkin, Esteban was a the top of his game and my Dad and me both when home with Lampkins blood on our shirt, we were in Red Carpet-front 3 rows!!!... De Jesus, fought Duran in Panama, and if you taught the left hook that drop Duran was a fluke, he did it again first round....it was hot in Panama City and Esteban not training properly faded and was outsted by the 11th round...and on the 3rd fight he also got TKO in the 12th...all this fights were close...very close...... Thanks for posting this - especially the video. I'm going to have to watch Duran-De Jesus 1 again. It's been years since I've seen it. De Jesus and Benitez were so talented - it's sad De Jesus died at such a young age and it's ashame Benitez peaked early. Regardless, both are Puerto Rican legends and rightfully so.
Interesting enough on how both lives had the tragic turn...Vita...did it all wrong.....all wrong...he could have been potentially the best PR boxer ever...nose candy and the good times did him in... Talking to Wilfred, he has no regrets...he would do it all over again!!
vita is one of the best fighters i have seen. he had the misfortune of being a contemporary of the beast of the 135 division "manos de piedra" i feel strongly that if not for duran, vita would have been the one to rule that division, and possibly considered an atg. unfortunately today, i believe that he is severely underated due to theses circumstances
...trouble followed Vita everywhre he went after getting his fisrt big payday, he bought a spanking new BMW, that he proceeded to total after a wek of buying it.....
Damn my man esteban..I remember him because of the argument I had about my Uncle 25 years ago...that he beat Duran.. he said no way I said yeah way..and then my cousin came running and confirmed it...Its funny though I had argued also that Boom Boom Mancini never lost to anyone and he said Arguellos KOed him...I said no way.. Geez i love boxing at the time I wasnt even 10 years old
Know the entier family.....beautiful people, his Mom she live for Wilfred... I have said this and will say it again ...It is sad that Puerto Rico goverment have not stepped up and help Wilfred since he brought all of us in Puerto Rico so much joy and excitment when he was on his prime....the Goverment owns that to Wilfred
I've heard of this as well. Hopefully the government can provide some assistance to Wilfred, but it's doubtful. Earlier in the year, when browsing Wilfred's website, I decided to chip in and give a little donation.
Every year I dedicate one post to Wilfred and post his link to the donations, he needed, that and autograph is waht he lives on now a days...he lost all his money...mostly from bad investments that his father Gregory did........pusrses that he never collected etc...well typical boxing **** ..... unfortunately Dona Clara devoted his life to take care of Wilfed!! If someone wants to donate , they can also buy the killer poster!! http://www.wilfredbenitez.com/index.htm This content is protected
