Belmar Augusto Preciado Gómez vs. César David Carmona Ramírez, 10 rounds @ super bantamweight

 

Preciado is the guy with more tats and darker shoes (and taller).

Also, they both have their names lettered on their waistbands.

 

Round 1

Good defense by Carmona but little besides that, just circling and maintaining a high guard with a bit of head movement when Preciado comes stalking in double-time with jabs and looping rights. Preciado not getting overly greedy, picking his spots mostly from mid-range, thumping a few jabs on the nose between Carmona's wrists and pulling his punches when he sees they're going to hit only arm, to prevent knuckle damage. Carmona manages to sprinkle in a few counter body flurries, but not enough.

At the halfway mark, Preciado has been the aggressor and more accurate and spiteful puncher throughout, aside from a few body brushings by Carmona in transit. Preciado might have scored a flash KD in the second but I was leaving work and only able to steal brief glances down at my phone in landscape mode from an oblique angle.

 

Carmona caught Preciado going once too many times to the well with duck-in right uppercuts on the breadbasket, clonking him with a hard chopping right that seems to land behind Preciado's ear and rock him, equilibrium shot! Follow-up assault from Carmona, now confident and surging after playing D for much of the fight so far. Definitely a round for Severo, maybe his first.

 

7th is real man's man's turf, both chipping away on each other with hooks & uppers to head & body and not counting the cost.

Slight edge to Carmona, playing matador skipping around from corner to corner but throwing and landing a bit more.

 

Preciado stuns Carmona with a stiff reach-in jab early in round eight and continues walking him down and chucking leather. First real sustained clinching of the night now. Carmona then hurts Preciado with a minute left and spends the rest of the way banging at his covered head, then putting him in a headlock when Preciado grinds in low!

Preciado hurt by a low blow in the ninth and while the ref is giving him recovery time in a neutral corner, Carmona struts around the ring raising both arms at the crowd to pump them up and feed off of them as though he is on the verge of a real KO.

To be fair he did jawjack Preciado several times in the round.

 

All out war in round ten, both wobbling as they fire haymakers, matter of time until somebody falls either from exhaustion or getting their button pressed.

 

Amazingly they both stay upright and trading punches in a back-and-forth cat-and-mouse waltz until the bell.

Excellent bout, could see it being scored a draw or either way by a few points. Each had a couple of clear rounds, so nothing wider than 98-92. Interested to see what the judges have. (and the commentators, who didn't provide an unofficial scorecard graphic throughout)
