They were good middleweights and they were excellent super middleweights. Boxing skills, hand speed, punching power and will to win. That's why they won so many world title fights.
Two of Britain's all time best, without a doubt,Fergy. Both hit their best form in the 168lbs division.
I was very impressed with Benn, Stevie. How after losing to Eubank at middle, he regrouped and came back even better at Supermiddle. What a bloody good era for the Brits back then.
I rate both behind Steve Collins at super middle for obvious reasons. And definitely behind Roy Jr or Toney. Each had runs with titles that were generally more impressive in their length than in their substance (as in who they beat). Eubank was a curious fellow. He often seemed to do the bare minimum to get by and eke out a win, even against pedestrian competition … but most often when facing his biggest challenges (Collins aside) he was able to raise his game. One of those ‘just win this one, worry about looking pretty doing so next time’ types. Been was a kamikaze fighter: always went all out to end his opponent, even to his own detriment sometimes. He was limited but had a big heart, a big punch and a good motor. I suspect no one ever looked forward to fighting him.
Top Dawgs, Benn more so than Eubank, whom definitely was selective... they both should have fought Toney and others, but sometimes it's timing and ligit, though their could have been a few good fights arranged for both, Eubank was careful while still being a good fighter, if not completely dislikeable... PBF & Broner like hateable.
Excellent fighters and for a time, made British boxing exciting and accessible. A step below RJJ, Toney and B-Hop - probably below Nunn as well, never really thought about it. Both fighters full of character, guts and heart, despite how gun-shy and cherry pickey Eubank became after Watson's tragedy.
I’m not so sure Collins who admittedly was a tough cookie should be ranked above them both certainly Benn were past prime.
