Maybe one of the hardest chins of the 90's, along with McCullough. Fought from junior middleweight all the way to cruiser. Aside from flash knockdowns I'm not sure if he was ever down. Flash knockdowns aren't exactly a massive mark against ultra durable fighters. Antuofermo was down a few times in similar conditions and was one of the toughest fighters ever. Thoughts?
Eubanks chin wasn't as good as McCullough's, who's chin was as good as any fighter who ever lived. Eubank was dropped against Benn in their first fight, Watson during their rematch, and Calzaghe. He did have a brilliant chin. Not among the elite however. I explained in another thread this week why I give McCullough's chin the edge over Hagler's. Because he fought Hamed and Morales who weren't just chilling punchers for their respective weights, but they were also physically bigger and much stronger than McCullough. Hagler either fought fighters his own size or punchers moving up in weight like Hearns and Mugabi. McCullough's chin went out of it's comfort zone more than Hagler's did. Not an opinion, a fact.
Very good points. But McCullough was stopped on accumulated punishment as Eubank was against Thompson. Do you think the size difference between McCullough and Larios is larger then Eubank against Thompson?
McCullough wanted to go on. He was going crazy. Getting stopped by a doctor doesn't mean you have a bad chin. He was pulled out against Larrios because he was taking too many punches, thats it. His chin was A+ that night. McCullough has never been down in his life.
Imo McCullough's chin is of the very best ever, i mean with LaMotta's, the cream of the crop. I would still call Eubank's chin very good/great, but not on that level.
McCullough's chin belongs in that very top bracket with fighters like Hagler, LaPorte, and McCall. These are fighters who were never dropped at all and its arguable whether or not they were even hurt or wobbled. The next bracket includes fighters like Eubank, Chavez etc etc.
eubank had a shut eye. so i wouldnt consider it a accumilated punishment...he coudl of finished the fight i think. chin wise i think eubank is defintly up there, it's only now after 10 years can we look back and go "yes great chin" the time when he was hurt most was when micheal watson threw a 2-1-2 combination in the rematch and clearly had chris in alot of pain. also collins had him pinned up against the ropes...but i think he was in serious pain than not having his legs under him.
Yes, Eubank had an outstanding chin, sure he had been decked before (the one vs Joe Cal was a good punch) but like Ali, he always got up & more importantly, his head cleared right away. His only stoppages were his 2 last fights at cruiser vs Thomson & I know for a fact he would have made it to the end albeit losing on pts to a man FAR too big for him while way past his own peak & Eubank gave almost as good as he got both times building an early lead before size took over. Heart & will have an awful lot to do with having a good chin & Eubank had both in abundance.... Eubank - ATG chin - Yes.
