When Calzaghe went into the Eubank fight, only 2 guys had lasted the distance with him, if I remember right. 2 guys. He also had 2 clean 10-count KO's. How often do you see a fighter counted out? Almost never. Also, 10 of his stoppages at that time had come within the 1st round. So don't act like only having 2 clean KO's is somehow a bad thing. He would just jump on you and bang you out early, that was his thing. And he knocked people senseless on multiple occasions. There's not always a count...

People see the Manfredo stoppage and assume that's how his whole career went. Sad, really.

How many champions did he knock out? Or contenders for that matter? Calzaghe was in no way shape or form a power puncher, end of story.

All of his early fights were accumulation stoppages too. A lot of revisionist history going on here. Very good fighter but not because of his power or lack there of.

I agree, I view Calzaghe as a great fighter, but saying he was a power puncher is laughable, he may have had better power than he did in his latter years, but he never had good power in my opinion. Especially when compared to some of his opponents when they were prime.

    Calzaghe:

Juan Carlos Gimenez Ferreyra--Took Eubank and Benn the distance. 3 world title fights.

Omar Sheika--Took Lucas, Beyer, and Lacy the distance in 4 world title fights.

Richie Woodhall--Former world champion, had 6 title fights.

Mario Veit X2--Held and defended the interim title, went on to beat Juergen Brahmer, a current titleholder.

    Tocker Pudwill--Challenged Ottke as well.

Byron Mitchell--Former champion with 8 world title fights.

Peter Manfredo Jr.--A Contender fo' realz.

Now let's look at a knockout puncher. Mike Tyson:

Alfonzo Ratliff--Former champ, 2 world title fights.

Trever Berbick--Champ, 2 world title fights.

Pinklon Thomas--Former champ, 4 world title fights.

    Larry Holmes--Larry Holmes.

Tony Tubbs--Former champ, 3 title fights.

    Michael Spinks--Champ, 15 title fights.

Frank Bruno X2--Champ, 5 title fights

    Carl Williams--Also challenged Larry Holmes

    Henry Tillman--1 world title fight

Bruce Seldon--Champ with 3 world title fights

    Francois Botha--4 world title fights

Now consider that Tyson had 10 more fights than Calzaghe, and lost 6. Calzaghe didn't have the same number of KO's, but then again, we're talking about Mike Tyson--THE knockout puncher. All we're saying is Calzaghe could bang a bit too, early on in his career.

Hard puncher or not it does not really matter.......He was a brilliant boxer......He schooled Lacy so thoroughly that it was ridiculous........Roy Jones 2

I would love to see him come out of retirement and face some of the Super 6 fighters (Kessler excluded) Been there done that. ....... I recently saw a thread where Dirrell was giving much respect to Kessler but totally disrespecting Joe...........Unbelievable.......Joe spanked Kessler and I am a Kessler fan

Yes, a bit weird that fighters only start to get respect from others when they lost 1-2 fights

In all fairness Calzaghe's adjusted his style around the time of Robin Reid due to his hands. So uptill Reid he was 25-0 (24 kos).

Reid onwards he's 21-0 (10 kos), half of those 11 would have been ko'd in Calzaghes younger years.

Btw Mind Reader didn't realise Phil Harris died, my bro told me tonight.

you can clearly see the slip in form since the lacy fight and ad to that his brittle hands. either way. he slaped hard enough to get respect from other fighters

Calzaghe was 36 in his last fight, not 38. And like I said, I don't think he was peak, but he was certainly nowhere close to being shot. He aged well as a fighter in my opinion, and had a few good fights left in him when he retired.

Yeah it is pretty sad, the new Deadliest catch season is on, I think you can catch the first two episodes tonight before the new one. It is the best season so far in my opinion.

jelousy. fighters like dirrell are just annoyed they couldn't get a chance against a legit great boxer like calzaghe, but theres a saying, be careful what you wish for. dirrell would og got his arse whupped.
