Chris Eubank told Steve Bunce's Boxing Hour that James DeGale will fail as a professional because he lacks the hunger to succeed. Having picked up Olympic gold in Beijing, Degales star has continued to rise since he signed professional terms with Frank Warren on whose bill he will make his debut on February 28. However, former WBO middleweight and super middleweight champion Eubank fears that he might struggle to fend off the outside pressures that continue to accompany his career. "Stay away from sin, stay away from guests, he told Bunce on Setanta Sports News on Thursday. You have to fight, you have to spar. Gifts kill your hunger. Fame kills your hunger. Girls will destroy you. Fighters who have their own way all the time. They become white elephants. The best example of this is Audley Harrison. "I hear James DeGale is getting a £1 million. I guarantee you he will fail. It robs your hunger. I fought Michael Watson. I wanted respect. I got up to carry on because I didn't have respect."
I agree The real fighters are those who are so much mire ingrained in the way of life of a fighter than the trappings of success Look at Naz gone at 27 the "celebrity" While a fighter like Roy Jones even though he made money was always ingrained in the life Running Dieting Sparring Isolation these are the road of a true fighter DeGale and the Khans are not really ingrained in the true nature of the sport like someone like Bernard Hopkins
de la hoya had wealth and fame from the start, didnt hurt him. totally depends on the character. sadly, i do think eubank will be proved right though.
yeah but inside the ring is all anyone will really remember him for. same with degale. or not remember him as the case may be.
DeGale can win with the money. He has the nasty gene like all other wealthy fighters who fought like they were skint. Adios.
DeGale just seems like a tosser to me. Accusing other fighters of making a name off him - arrogant twat is still a month away from his pro debut, probably a four rounder against a pudding with a 7-139-11 record. Groves seems a nice kid, already on six rounders from the word go - hopefully fighting a better level of competition than the protected Sports Network Olympians. Gavin is the one from Frank's stable that will go furthest, if they can keep him off the Carlsberg.
Flinty, so you're a "Pen-rowl" boy! I assumed you were from N Wales (Flint). That's close to Denys Cronin country, in the Brad. He was a great amatuer, shame he didn't make it to the top of pro tree. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=iK0z0gWNVxg
Jealousy really does breed contempt! poor old James is gettin' **** from all sides when all he's doing is defending his corner... That gold medal around his neck's brought him lots of attention and a fair bit of it is unwanted. I think his style will do well in the pro's, he's an awkward stylist to deal with and he can adapt to suit. He's seems determined and can handle a tear up but I've only watched him through the olympics . I don't get all this moaning about someones character it means F-all in the ring. B-hop's 'one' of the biggest knob-ends to don gloves but he's a master at what he does. PBF's personality? well words just fail me( they don't but I've slated him befroe and can't be bothered) but he's a Ring Wizard, 'mercurial' Money can take away hunger but depends on the personality, if they have something to prove they can still achieve it.
yes, i agree, very wise words from chris eubank. where's the motivation when you're already a millionare for doing nothing. people arent jelouse but they can get resentful, its different from jelousey. people resent boxers who are millionares and living celebrity lifestyles and who as pros. havent actually done anything. degale is falling for the celebrity side of things. watch he'll get carried away and love being a big fish in a small pond. then one day he'll meet a real fighter who's desperate for the things he was handed on a plate and he'll get sparked and humiliated.
After reading this I'd have to agree with your comments and Eubank's. http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00024/25_DeGale_24041a.jpg
