How is DeGale falling for the celebrity side of things exactly? because he's on TV and in boxing news ? That might be because of the gold medal he earned which put him in the position he's in now i.e lots of attention and a good offer to go pro. Thats just the way of the world these days, many other potential talents will be seized on with exactly the same expectations put on them and the same criticisms levelled at them. Give him a chance in The Ring i say...
He was going to be an accountant or lawyer or something, In Mexico where the people considered wealthy probably wouldn't be in America. So while he doesn't come from a typical poor boxing background it doesn't mean he was rolling in cash from birth.
Just the sort of comment to build a young guy's confidence! Yes, I think Eubank has really done his best to encourage De Gale to be positive. Thinking a guy will fail is one thing, making your views public is quite another. Chris, comments like this show you lack class! All the best James De Gale!
It's been proven time and time again background does not make a difference to success, higher or lower class, it just so happens more lower class kids get into the sport. It's about fighting heart, money does not come into it. Nobody thinks of money in the ring. You don't quit because you have money, and you don't battle like a warrior for money. If this is the case, why do some fighters go on past their sell by date as millionaires? The guy ain't even fought yet, its a ludicrous comment as much as I respect Chris as a fighter.
A great post .. Eubank is talking from his personal experience and from his own personal psychology, he's basing that on James Degale's future which is ridiculous .. Every fighter is different. When Sugar Ray Leonard won gold and turned pro he was paid supremely well too when he hadnt acheived as a pro .. The olympic gold medal opens the door for plenty of money and theres nothing wrong with that, as long as James knows that the pro's is 'proper' fighting and not 'point scoring' .. How Eubank can totally write off a man who hasnt even fought as a pro yet is beyond me. I dont like Degale because he seems far too mouthy for his talent but give the guy a chance. I think Eubank is basing his opinion on Harrison and Khan's pro career's ..
So explain why the bottom demographic in a population usually provide the most boxers? First it was Irish Americans, then Italian/ Jewish Americans and then after that Afro-Americans? The cliche is that "The pursuit of a dream is as powerful as fleeing from a nightmare" (or some thing like that) but I just don't buy it. Hard times breed fighters.
Great post Gaz .. Boxing isnt as strong in America (especially) as it used to be, because Black/Italian/Irish people in America have more options in life nowadays, thats a very important point but Eubank shouldnt write off a guy as a 'failure' before he's even laced up the gloves as a pro.
I am surprised Eubank of all people would express such views about a British fighter who was just starting out. Clearly, he must dislike Degale a lot. He is right that Degale's style might be more suitable for the amateurs. He is also right that Degale doesn't seem to have the right attitude starting out. Still...
lessons should be learnt from amir khan. even khan himself says his celebrity lifestyle contributed to his downfall. why didnt he go out to the states before now? why now when its too late? because he had no hunger, he was enjoying swanning round behaving like a world champion in waiting when he hadnt even done anything. apart from beat up bums. there's no point in turning a blind eye to whats happened, these young men have not a achieved a thing in the pro ranks, they are at the bottom and yet they are millionares. where's the hunger and drive? there is none. then they wonder why they're ktfo as soon as they are mistakenly put in the ring with a hungry, real fighter
