I watched the fight back and Groves won every round, dropping Eubank 3 times in the process (rounds 2, 7 and 10) which the ref ignored. 120-105 would have been a accurate score.
Punch stats rarely paint an accurate picture but for what they're worth, Eubank threw 130 more power shots overall and landed 75 to Groves' 84. It definitely wasn't close but it was a very hard fight. There's no disputing the knockdown in the second but that was the only substantive one actually caused by the result of a punch landing. Eubank's hit-and-miss bullrushing and wild swings were responsible for the other slips, at least from what I could tell on repeat viewing. I scored 3 rounds to Eubank but I'm not inclined to score rounds for pressure unless it's effective. It's possible he may have felt differently and some judges will score pressure over a limited amount of clean punches landed. I'm trying to play devil's advocate but in reality it clearly wasn't close. It was simply a stellar piece of boxing laid down by Groves. I don't begrudge Eubank deluding himself a little. Maybe he needs it to maintain his ethic. Especially given his one-man band approach to training. It'll be a mighty fall if he starts doubting himself when he's in charge of all aspects of his development. I also can't see Senior playing second fiddle to a new trainer of any worth. I'd expect them to chalk it up to an off night and change little. One thing's for certain, win or lose, his shelf life's going to be short if he takes that much punishment again. Too many people have been baying for his comeuppance to take knee-jerk declarations of him being an exposed hype-job seriously. I don't think you can keep losing in order to learn. I do think losing to potentially the best fighter in your weight class buys you the opportunity to come again before closing the book on someone. I need to see what both men do from here before I can gauge just how bad Eubank is relative to just how good Groves is.
I'm not sure that Groves was particularly brilliant. I do think that after the first few rounds, he should have been looking to take him out. I genuinely think that the small amount of swings that got through worried Groves a bit, had more power than he thought, so just didn't give him the chance. Great tactics, but he wasn't 'Stellar'. I certainly don't think Groves is the best SMW. Eubank needs to go back to MW where he belongs.
