Not likely. Probably wouldn't have got much credit for the win anyway.

I agree, but I don't think he feared him.

Again, I agree. I don't think he'd have gotten credit for beating Nunn or Douglas. He didn't get much credit for dominating Ruiz.

His Dad wouldn't allow it, but it brought them together for the first time in 6 years.

Roy was constantly toying with the idea of going up to heavy after the Douglas fight was cancelled.

The Nunn - Woods fight was cancelled 3 or 4 times, and after fighting Guthrie, Nunn didn't fight again for over two years.

    general Zod,

I think the highlighted part is a little harsh.

Roy contemplated going up, but in the end he stayed at LHW. But again, Nunn didn't fight for over two years, and the Woods fight kept getting cancelled. But what kind of guy who feared Nunn at LHW, would pursue Holyfield at HW anyway? Roy's made a lot of mistakes in his career, but some of the criticism was unjust. He seemed to be constantly in a no win situation.

    ??????
He was in his mid 20's at that point.

His mom said go for it so he then went and asked his father. You notice that his mom always gets left out of the retelling of that tale along with Seth Abraham
He had no reason to fight anyone and risk his no 1 ranking, with the Woods fight falling through he would then move up to cw

I don't think Roy feared anyone..

In my honest opinon, I think Roy thought Nunn was a high risk/low reward type of fight due to his style.. And Nunn had already been beat by a guy Jones whipped, I am sure he would just get more criticism that he didn't fight Nunn at an earlier time.

    general zod,

It was still his Dad at the end of the day. Despite their huge falling out in 91/92, Roy had tried several times to make contact, but Big Roy was stubborn. But in 98 when he stepped forward, Roy listened even though he was 29. He still respected him. Roy had trained with him from the age of seven. I don't think Roy pushed the issue, because it brought them back together for the first time in 6 years, which obviously pleased the whole family, and Roy knew that he'd still got time on his side to give it a go in the future.

Roy's very close to him Mom, but her opinion was never going to take precedence over Big Roy's opinion.

But both of your previous posts are implying that Roy avoided Nunn for a second time, as though he was afraid to fight him. Your post reads as though Nunn pulled out of the Woods fight, because Roy had said he was going to fight at HW. That's how it reads to me. But Roy just considered it, and the Nunn and Woods fight kept getting cancelled. Then in the link that you've posted up, you've highlighted the end paragraph, and obviously agree with the writer, that Roy was going to avoid Nunn again.

That's fine, and you're entitled to that opinion. But a guy who feared a 38 year old Michael Nunn, surely wouldn't have contemplated fighting Evander Holyfield instead?

Also, if Nunn didn't fight for over two years, then it would be unfair to imply that Roy was avoiding him. We know that Woods ended up getting his shot at Roy, when he became his mandatory.

I think you're a great poster, but I think that you're too hard on Roy.
