In Dec 16 (1994) Boxing News... "I could squeeze him into the schedule in April of next year but my WBO belt cannot be on the line. I'd be glad to go to America to fight him." "He has a speed the likes of which I've not seen in a middleweight fighter. "When I'm challenger or I'm expected to lose, that's when I excel: Benn I, Watson I, Rocchigiani; I completely dominated them. Watson II, you saw what happened. "The better the opponent, before or during, the better I'm going to be. "I don't think you've seen the best of this fabulous young fighter Roy Jones yet and I think I'll bring that out of him, and that in turn will bring the best out of me. "I don't think he can go on to be one of the all-time greats if he fights me, regardless of the result - that would be irrelevant. "I don't advise him to fight me, if he has aspirations to go down alongside Sugar Ray Leonard, and I don't advise me to fight him! "I need to see the financial situation of that." "Ideally, if he's still champion, I'll fight him in my last bout and I'll fight him in England. "But I'm running out of opponents. I won't be fighting any more southpaws because it doesn't make for good television, but unfortunately seven (fighters) out of the top-10 are southpaws and one of the other world champions is southpaw. "So Jones may have to come soon." "I want to be the first one to look back and say I beat the system. I'm on the home straight and have been for four fights. "I won't be a prize fighter this time next year, that's 100%."
There is a interview on here from 07 or 08 where Eubanks explains that he did not want to fight Jones then, how it's a business, and it would've not been a good move for him. He actually said, that he felt he would've loss, but pushed Jones to his limit, that he wouldn't had been the same after the fight.
Yeah I read that as well, I think Chris just wanted to defend his portion of the SMW championship and thats it. I also would give a pre Watson Eubank a good chance against Roy, whether he would win it though is another matter.
They were from a presser following this fight.. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0IkUt1u9SM[/ame] He also said, "I'd rather fight James Toney if he can boil himself down one more time. He insulted my mother! That's beyond boxing."
The give-me fight out of that class of fighters will always be Steve Collins v James Toney. It would have been a great fight. Toney would have been the favorite - but Collins would have won. A betting man's dream fight.
Just missed eachother. Though there was talk of Eubank-Collins at super-middle in Dublin in early '93. I can't see Collins winning that. I can, actually, I see where you're coming from. But no. No, no, no. Looking at McCallum-Collins, you see just how inferior Collins is when in with a naturally gifted beautiful puncher, much sharper puncher.
Why do people call Eubank Eubanks? Anyway i think its a crying shame this fight wasn't made of for that matter Benn v Jones Was Jones avoiding them?
No. Jones never ducked the brit pack at all. They all wanted nothing to do with jones except collins, and that fight just didn't happen because of money. A prime jones at 168 would've beaten all of the middle/supermiddles in britian and they knew it too. Eubank would've taken roy to hell and back, but roy would've won a convincing UD over the eccentrist.
