Eubank senior ,very overrated.

Only two top 12 mw"s of his time he beat were benn and watson

He avoided nunn,mclellan,jones jnr,toney,j jackson,h graham , kalambay,barkley

 

How could he avoid them if they weren't #1 contender? They avoided him just as much.

Kalambay wouldn't leave Italy, and Julian Jackson was out with an eye injury post-Graham, while Graham was out with all his teeth being replaced post-Jackson! Barkley had jumped to light-heavy ffs. Roy Jones Jr was fighting in front of 150 people at the time against journeymen? Toney was nobody til he beat Nunn and by then Eubank was tied up with Watson and his weight issues. Nunn had described Eubank as "poison".....

McClellan was unknown at the time, til he wiped out Mugabi for Eubank's belt.

 

Benn post-Barkley had to be considered the hottest thing in the middleweight division, considering Nunn had struggled for 12 rounds with Iran in a fight that could've even been scored the other way on aggression.

 

And Eubank looked better against Watson than McCallum had, for the first five rounds until the weight issues kicked in.

Go back and watch the first nigel benn fight. You wont see that level nowadays. Never over rated. Underrated if anything. The only problem was the standard of the guys across the pond were unbelievable at the time. Roy jones. Toney and even the guys around there were way ahead of what you see nowadays.

Just a pity eubank never tested himself against them in the end. It wasnt as easy to negotiate wiyh them as it is nowadays.

Would have loved to see benn v roy jones fight. For me no one could touch jones. He was unbelievable. But if there was anyone that would have kept swinging bombs at him it would have been nigel benn.

Still think roy jones was light years above everyone at the time tho

 

He was a great boxer , but a better showman ,, All time great , British matybee world definetly not ,, His fights with Benn wrer the 2 top british not the 2 top world fighters of the time ,, he definetly avoided the likes of Jones , and Toney , but heh why would you take a flogging of them when you could make probably more in domestic s****s

 

But heres the deciding factor. The standard back then was light years above where its at today.

Watch the benn v eubank first fight. I rememember watching it after watching froch v groves one. Although that was a great fight. Wasnt nearly up to the level of benn v eubanks as an example.

 

Off topic but another thing from that eubanks benn first fight. Couldnt believe how good jim watt was at commentating it considering what he serves up nowadays. No sure if its age or if he just reads from the sky script but he was actually good at it at one point if i remember it correctly.

And yes, look at McCallum and Nunn as well, they were two of the most skilled and talented fighters I've ever seen, both at Benn and Eubank's weight at the same time! (Streets beyond head-butting runner Bernard Hopkins ever was...McCallum and Nunn)

 

If you look at his career record after the second Watson fight it is not impressive, and two fights before Watson was the infamous Sherry fight so he wasn't impressive then either. He didn't fight in the US for a title either, aside from ducking the names there. At least Benn stopped Barkeley and DeWitt in their backyard.

Hard to be impressive against a guy (Sherry) just running around the ring and not being penalized for it.

So what if he didn't fight in the US for a title. He fought in the world. What does the location matter? For what it's worth, the NEC shat all over any Boardwalk venue.

 

Benn knocked Sherry out in three rounds, and those consecutive defenses post Watson were mostly decisions, some splits and draws also, and then were not against names most would remember, two fights vs Ray Close for example, a draw and a split decision win. If I recall Close was robbed on both occasions. Nobody remembers Ray Close though, just the pea**** Eubank.
