Sugar Ray Leonard was clueless with Sherry, sending him over to face Eubank having not actually faced anyone as a pro yet….and picking Pepe Correa who taught him absolutely nothing (Correa taught Leonard and Lennox Lewis nothing either - Leonard was already established to say the least and Steward fixed A LOT with Lewis)

It's not like Thornton was particularly special, he lost handily to every very good or great fighter he fought, Collins, Toney, Eubank and RJJ, Eubank was probably the closest one he came to beating.

Obviously not the same guy when facing Jones (post retirement /post shoulder surgery), shoulder popped again twice in that match

Thornton was at his most dangerous around 87 (remember a big article in the Ring regarding his right hand), but at his cutest vs Merqui Sosa (and Eubank /Toney)

As a pro Sherry never beat anyone even remotely class, his pinnacle was winning the Canadian Middleweight title from a 12 fight nobody ,and losing it in his first defence ,being stopped by a 14 fight nobody. They weren't guys pulled out of the Ring ratings that's for sure!
Correction. Close was ranked no8 in Dec 94.

What was his best win, a split dec over Sosa?
    Ring ranked
    No 9 in 90
    No9 in91
    No 8 in 92
    No 8 in 93

You don’t seem to grasp how good high level competitive boxers are compared to, say, yourself or Joe Blow. These aren’t normal people plucked from the sky. It’s hugely disrespectful

Who cares what the writers and editors of a magazine think anyway? What’s the big deal.

Yes Merqui Sosa. Not Joe Bloggs from McDonalds.

Who cares whether they were ranked? Certainly not you Chris!
They were not world class men,and the fact that you were less than convincing against a couple of them is on you.How I or any man in the street compares to a pro fighter is totally irrelevant to this discussion.
    Disrespectful?
    Trying to hype;
Storey,Esset ,Amaral,Schommer, Stretch ,or Sherry.as world class is disrespectful, to the intelligence of the posters on this thread.imo
You've much to be proud of, epic wars with Watson, and Benn e .g.
However , looking back ,do you ever regret not having faced Jones,Toney, Nunn ,Barkley?

    James Toney -

'I'm surprised you haven't said anything bad about Tony Thornton yet!'
'Well, he hasn't tried to diss me. I respect Tony Thornton. He's a cagey veteran. When I was a kid I used to watch him on TV. He beat lots of great fighters before I even turned pro, So he knows his way round a ring as well as anyone. He knows all the angles, all the moves.
He can be real slippery and I know he's tough. But when the fighting's over he's just a regular guy.'
'They call him the 'Punching Postman'!'
'Yeah,' Toney laughed, 'he's a ****ing postman!'
'Different kind of delivries to your last job!'
'Ain't pay as well as either,' Toney observed. 'But I don't need no letter to tell me that Thornton's better than most. Look, he fought Chris Eubank in Britain and he won that fight. They gaveit to Eubank- a split decision- but it should have gone Thornton's way. I take my hat off to him. I'm gonna earn him his biggest pay-day on Friday. But I'm still gonna lay some bad hurt on him.'
'Have you thought about this fight a lot?'
I got Tony Thornton on the brain. I see his face last thing at night. When I wake up I see him again. But it's worse for him 'cos I'm the champion and he's on his way out. I'm younger and stronger than him. He's no fool. He knows it.'
'But you must have some doubts,' I said. 'You've said how canny Thornton is in the ring. Wheat if he beats you?'
    'It ain't happening..'
'But what if it did? You must sometimes have a little fear too....'
    'No!'
'Even just before the fight? While you're waiting in your dressing room? When you're walking out to the ring?'
Toney shook his head. 'It's just a strange time.'

There are levels from world class, fringe contender, gatekeeper,,journeyman and, for want of a better expression, tomato can ,slightly better than B U M, which I don't use about a pro boxer.

I like it when people refer to pro boxers as bums and cans, because it means they’re referring to themselves as a piece of **** on the floor because they couldn’t lay a glove on these bums and cans
