Holmes lost to Van Horn in 1991, in a fight he was dominating for six rounds until running out of gas and being stopped on a body shot on one knee late on. He was a far better and more skilled fighter than Darrin Van Horn in reality, and more avoided in the 80s than McCallum ever was. He looked great early on against Eubank, and Herol for that matter. Short and squat but explosively fast reflexes and concrete fundamentals. Really good fighter Lindell Holmes. Awesome physique too!

 

One way to look at it is imagining you're 147 and have Mayweather, Whitaker, Leonard, Hearns, Norris and Curry all at their best in your weights at the same time! That's what it was like when Chris had Toney, Nunn, Jones Jr, Barkley, Jackson and McCallum as fellow champions with him. The best lb4lb fighters in the world!

So I wouldn't say his resume was 'shocking' at all because in any other era Benn and Watson and Rocchigiani would've been undisputed 168lb kings and Thornton would've been a world champion. If he won against all the guys listed above he'd have BY FAR the best resume in world history. (He probably couldn't beat Jones Jr or Nunn, unless Jones Jr's chin was always a weak point or Nunn had an off-night. McCallum was probably too smooth, consistent and fit for him with his chin and body work at 160 over 12.)

 

Let's not forget, Amaral went on to give Frankie Liles a tough fight. And Schommer outpointed Virgil Hill after the Olympics, but was self-managed as a pro while working as a stockbroker! Schommer clearly had skills!

 

If you place more score on holding and running than counter punching and combination punching, Galvano beat Essett. Clearly.

 

It's sad that Hagler never fought Don Lee when Lee was #1 contender or Lindell Holmes when Holmes was #1 contender, or Herol Graham when Graham was #1 contender. It's well-documented that Lee and Holmes used to send Tommy Hearns head over heels at the Kronk in Tommy's prep for Hagler, and that Alan Minter literally failed to lay a glove on Graham in Minter's prep for Hagler.

Yet Marvin is renowned as the greatest middleweight ever, despite there being better middleweights than John Mugabi in Europe in Herol, Kalule and Kalambay, all of whom would've beaten the ponderous Hagler who fought Mugabi. Tony Thornton was about neck-and-neck with Mugabi in my opinion, beating Mike Tinley and Merqui Sosa with technical offensive skill and winning five of the first six rounds against Collins and four of the first six against Toney. And Mugabi was Hagler's best (natural) middleweight challenger. Benn was faster and more dynamic and creative than Mugabi. (When Mugabi sparred with Watson in '84, he struggled, and when he came back in '87 to spar Watson, he got smashed up.)
