He was there in the beginning, but he stepped back and left it to Teddy Atlas. Cus was ultimately the boss but he would only pop in the gym to check his progress etc. Teddy Atlas would get guidance from his mentor ‘Cus’ and several times he wanted to kick Tyson out of the gym for various behaviours (bullying and sexual harassment) but Cus wouldn't let him.
Read Teddy Atlas’s book, listen to his anecdotes on his podcast etc Mike Tyson gives the credit to Cus in his book because him and Teddy Atlas fell out, they can’t stand each other, but it was Teddy Atlas who trained him. You can say it was Cus who did it, but it was indirectly and through Teddy Atlas.
Ok, read Tyson’s book and whilst he gives Teddy no credit, he mentions that Cus would just pop in the gym to have a look and didn’t actually go and watch him fight. He was an old man and it was Atlas who Cus entrusted to run his gym and train the fighters. I don’t understand why you would want to discredit it? Cus discovered him, recognised his talent, brought him up (outside the gym), but refused to acknowledge the obvious signs that Tyson was a pretty messed up individual.
Tyson was 15 when mitt holder Atlas shot at him from point blank range, skimming his ear. Tyson improved a lot technically after that when Rooney took over the mitts.
Ok mate, it’s took me a while to realise it’s because you don’t like Teddy Atlas to the point where we can’t have a balanced debate. I’ll leave you be.
Why would something that happened 35+ years ago thousands of miles away between people I don’t even know ‘hurt me’? I couldn’t care less, lad.
It's very clear that Atlas despises Mike, after Mike touched up his niece and got Atlas kicked out of his home. Kind of obvious.
