So many people are overrating Eubank here. Toney was just a higher calibre fighter. He had too many skills, and too much smarts for Eubank, who was HARDLY the brighest fighter in the ring.
Too many people are continuing to overrate Toney, who, while an intelligent fighter, was not the most versatile. Against the slick, stick and move style that Eubank could bring, Toney would more than likely be forced to lead, which is a game he (for lack of a better word) sucks at. Toney's style is better suited to straight up and down, offensive boxing types and brawlers rather than slick outboxers, as he's just too flat-footed to perform well against them. Eubank had his issues as well, but too often people tend to disregard Toney's limitations. I see it being a close affair that could swing either way depending on how each fighter (primarily Eubank) approaches it.
Overrating Eubanks? What "too many skills" are you refering to? Toney was much easier to hit in his prime than he is now. The skills you are refering to are probably the skill set you see him implement against plodding heavyweights. Because he wouldn't be doing that stuff successfully against a prime Eubanks. Passive shoulder rolls works with a Rahman, not a faster boxer who's intending on working from different angles.
I'm glad to see Eubank getting the recognition he deserves here. Even though he maintained that it was he who 'didn't wish to fight' Roy Jones, I still say that Prime Eubank at MW, or Eubank pre-Watson at SMW, would've given Jones all he could handle. And there's no way Roy's knocking Eubank out, so, how would Eubank get on with the judges? Does anyone think it would even be close? Me personally think Jones wins 116-112 at either weight. Eubank certainly wouldn't have allowed himself to be whitewashed.
Not me, and after I saw Benn crash through the ropes, I thought thats it... then a few rounds later, Benn was all over the shop, and again, i thought thats it, and again... then, he started to wobble McClennan...well, terrific fight from two GREAT fighters, just such a shame.
But did you hear Eubank afterwards.... he says he doesn't like the sport (which was well known from him) especially where the other guys having swearing/abusing your mother... Benn goes on to say he respects him (Toney) as a very good fighter but said he had a big attitude problem. He says he thrives on Fear.... and after and during the McCllenan fight he proved like ha had many times before, how brave he was and what great heart he had... I would think Toney would probably take him out though, just because he was too cavelliar and open..... had a decent chin but was pretty wild.... He could bang as well.... but Toney has a granite chin. So Toney would probably have won that one.
Roy-Eubank would have looked like a carbon copy of Roy-Toney. Eubank would have gotten shut the hell out, and embarassed. Please stop overrating Eubank. He got a GIFT in his first fight with Watson. And no disrespect to Watson, but Micheal was nowhere near the level of Toney, and not even in the same UNIVERSE as Roy. Trust me, Eubank knew the deal when it came to Roy. RJ would have beaten Eubank VERY easily.
What?! Roy - Eubank would have been a carbon copy of Roy - Toney? Have you ever watched the two fight? Maybe you're right, maybe at the end of the day Jones wins. But to say that it would be a carbon copy of Roy - Toney makes no sense. Sure, Eubank never fought a boxer as stylistic as Roy. But has Roy ever fought someone like Eubank? No. There's nothing to compare it to. Harding, Griffin, Reggie Johnson??? none of these guys have a style that Eubank did. Maybe Roy wins. But it's no Toney - Jones carbon copy, and there isn't a guy in Jones catalogue that would have fought like Eubank.
Whilst I agree that Watson was robbed in the first Eubank fight, and Watson wasn't anything like Toney, he was in is own right a fantastic boxer. Sure he didn't too well against McCallum, but he sparked Nigel Bennw when he was at his most fearsome, coming up through the ranks destroying everyone, way before Eubank. I think Roy-Eubank would be as close as I said. If anyone's awkward style was going to put Roy off his stride it would've been Eubank IMO.
