How do people see this one panning out if Toney makes the unification before facing Jones? I remember as a young lad thinking Eubank was nigh on unbeatable. I know his style wasn't always pleasing but he always seemed able to land very clean shots no matter who he faced (although his opposition was by and large questionable) even though part of his game left forever after the Watson fight. Toney at this point was obviously about to start struggling with his weight. I'm not talking about a prime for prime matchup, I'm talking specifically in 1994. Did Toney still hae enough to master Eubank or was he disadvantaged enough that Chris could take a decision?
This fight was talked about at the time I think tonney would probably win on points in a close fight .if tonney took on eubank when he was struggling at the weight he would be in trouble as Chris was very strong
Eubank always showed up when it mattered the most though. Up until he faced Steve Collins when he was sliding a bit himself, he always turned it on for the big fights.
Eubank proved himself a world class operator and I would say he is a top 10 SMW all time but he never stood himself above his peers at any one time in his career. It leaves a few questions imo.
Eubank is absurdly overrated on this forum. ABSURDLY. It's no secret that he wanted NO PARTS of the likes of Nunn, McCallum, Jones, and Toney. He would have been soundly outclassed by all four. Toney, both skill wise and talent wise was a cut above Eubank. I've heard people say some pretty DUMB things on this forum about Eubank, such as if he were around today he'd knock out Ward. LOL. Comical. He wasn't in Ward's league either.
I find it's Toney who gets obscenely overrated around here. People act as if no one could touch him. On another thread some are picking him to beat Jack Dempsey. This is a guy who needed the gift of all gifts to beat Dave f*ckin Tiberi. He didn't look a class above Jackson, Griffin and Thadzi in skill and talent either. Say what you will about Eubank but there are no comparable embarrassments on his record.
Both prefer to have their opponent to come to them so I think Eubank will have an advantage in that regard as he was the more mobile boxer and would make Toney come to him. Toney lacks the agility and mobility to move enough to draw Eubank in. But Toney was better defensively, while Eubank's jab and movement will give him problems it won't be enough to over come that shoulder roll and counter right hand. While Eubank was a counter puncher he wasn't afraid of leading either and when he does, Toney will do what he has done so many times and pick off the right hand and then counter with his own. I can't see what Eubank does to defend against that right hand counter. I don't think Eubank is smart enough to find an answer for the right hand counter, he would need to either duck it of smother it whenever he throws a right and that just wasn't how he fought. But of course it depends which version of Toney shows up. If he's in shape then he wins a decision, no way he stops Eubank who had a chin as good as his. But if he shows up like he did against Jones Jr then I could see him getting out hustled by Eubank and lose a close decision. One thing for sure the trash talk between these 2 would be epic, it would have made a tremendous rivalry, I have the feeling neither would like each other much as they were so different in character.
Eubank did have a tremendous beard so I do se it going 12 rounds. I do think Eubank was intelligent enough to figure any fighter out but whether he could do what he wanted leaves a bit to be desired. He wasn't the best athlete nor the quickest or biggest banger. I think in 94 Chris takes it. Before then it's all Toney imo.
Eubank needed the gift of all gifts to beat chunky club fighter Dan f*ckin Schommer. is that not an embarrassment?
Lets not pretend that the Dave Tiberi fight didn't happen. Toney needed a gift in that fight, he also lost to Thadzi and twice to Griffin. Toney was a great fighter, he had sublime defensive skills and the best right hand counter of his generation but he wasn't as good as his middleweight run would suggest. He lacked discipline and good defensive fighters like Griffin and Jones Jr were able to best him. I still think he's better than Eubank though. Eubank wasn't as good as RJJ and he wasn't as slick as Griffin. How Griffin took away Toney's right hand counter in the 2nd fight was a stroke of genius, that fight showed how heavily Toney relied on that right hand counter, without it he wasn't as formidable.
