How do you evaluate Marciano-Charles I from both fighter's respective performances? Can it be said that it was maybe Marciano's most notable defense? That he proved his class and mettle over the 15 round distance...and was this one of Charles' most impressive performances as a great fighter in that he indicated that he may have been the man to beat the Rock just a few years earlier, like in '49 or '50? Both men "gutted it out" impressively with each other, and I don't know which guy was more impressive that night...so opinions please!

I always thought that Charles (first fight) was Marciano's most formidable opponent. But then I'm a bit Charles fan. Objectively, Walcott can make the same claim. Ezzard fought his heart out and came with a clear game plan, blocking the left and sharp on his own counters to capitalize on Marciano's clumsiness. As always, it's easier said than done..

Damn, I gotta re-watch that fight tonight.

My favourite fight too doug :good just phenomenal this one - magnificent performance from both men - Charles was incredible and just proved what an amazing amazing fighter he was - and also showed (for me) one of the greatest chins in heavyweight history - certainly for someone who might not necessarily spring to Mind first as someone being iron chinned - and Marciano? Well he was just inhuman in this one - I struggle to see how anyone can really do much else than just take punishment when he was in that mood??! I don't see anyone really being able to stem the flow enough - Charles did about as well as I see anyone having been able to do personally

It proves how much of a Badass Ezzard Charles was, and once again that The Rock was not the skillless brawler thats he's portrayed and billed as by many.

Great fight, Charles was on a high going into this fight after 2 electric KO's over the 6"3 Coley Wallace and Bob Satterfield....It shows another side of Charles from the Louis and Walcott fights...Charles had the heart of a Lion and Marciano showed many subtle defensive moves, not the crude slugger that Charles had thought...Rocky looked awkward but different story inside the ring...Ezzard is up-there as one of the most gifted guys, next to SRR, and the elite....Marciano one of if not the most valuable LB for LB the heavyweight division and beyond

Ezz raised serious questions about whether or not he could have decisioned Marciano over the championship distance in a peak for peak showdown, and Rocky's frenetic 100 punch closing round may be the most staggering finish for any winning heavyweight who heard the final bell. Take a look at Jerry Quarry's opening 93 punch round in Frazier I. Rocky surpassed that pace in round 15.

Charles was brilliant here, giving ground slowly, while remaining completely off the ropes. It's a key reason why I'm convinced he'd have defeated young Foreman. George would not have been able to pin him down where Foreman could have merely hammered away before George himself gassed.

I agree, the more I think about this fight I think Charles would have answers for Foreman but George would have been confused and faded and Charles would have done a lot of damage inside the pocket and out again

Marciano took control of the fight from the 6th round on listening to the radio broadcast, So its gives a more full pic plus the fight film we have to get a complete ideal of what went down.

Charles took the first 4 rounds, Rocky came on in 5, took over in 6, and didnt give the ball back for the rest of the fight. Charles was able to win 1 round I belive after the 6th round.

Over all good fight. Marciano started slow, and Charles could not really do anything point wise once Rocky got going.

:dealWell said, and in a nutshell..it showed off the best of both men. A truly quality championship fight. A back and forth battle between two REAL champions. My estimation and respect for Ezzard Charles soars because of this fight..and as if he wasn't great enough already.

Same here, really proved that he was more than just a master boxer, but also one of the toughest and fearless fighters ever, was afraid of no one and backs down to no one.

Great fight from 2 great fighters...Charles' back doesn't touch the ropes until the 15 round...The Rock had him in big trouble in the 6th round...Ezzard held on...non stop action during the whole fight...there was more auction in 1 round of this fight then any heavyweight fight in recent years...

About 6 or 7 about, maybe less than half the fight.

But the round by round broadcast is out there, so it gives you a more complete ideal what went on.

Yes the broadcast is missing some rounds, but only like 3 or so rounds. But it gives you a short summary of what happen in the missing rounds.

Charles rule early, Marciano took over in the middle point, and out punch Charles in the later part of the fight.
