Just want to add that a case can be made that he beat Moorer in their first fight, Lewis in their 2nd fight (I thought Lewis won the first fight though), Ruiz in their 3rd fight, and Valuev. He was also closing the gap vs. Byrd but got started too late in the fight. All of these fights took place while Holyfield was past his best... even the Moorer fight, even though he did great things after this fight.

define a hero? He is a great fighter for sure. Hero? Like many have said here - no.

He might not be hero. Hell he is anti-hero or villian i dont care. But one thing is for sure he had the heart & balls to do few man can do in their careers.

just realize American hero? well boxing hero is more fitting

I say he is, certainly a hero in boxing. If only fighters today were half as exciting the sport wouldnt be on its heels like it is. Holyfield gave his life, health, soul and fortune to boxing, he is an American boxing hero.

He's an epic, gutsy and heroic fighter. In terms of heart and determination he's one of the best ever and coming after Tyson self destructed and the lazy, underachieving ****s that were the 80's heavyweight elite he was a throwback and a breath of fresh air.

Outside the ring he's seriously flawed but so ****ing what?

He earnt his fortune and if he chooses to squander it that's his business as are the illegitimate children, infidelities and whatnot.

I don't think he's a hero just as I don't think any highly paid professional sports people are heroes. They do what they do for their own benefit at the end of the day. Heroes to me are the police and fireman who selflessly risked and gave their life on 9/11 or the servicemen and women who defended their country and made the ultimate sacrifice in the various armed conflicts over the years.

That said I sure as **** admire the hell out of Evander as a fighter.

And not exactly a clean fighter in the ring. Holyfield once bite a man in the amateurs. He was DQ's in the Olympics ( A bad call ), and as a pro used his head to foul.

A warrior in the ring, but far from a clean fighter and gentleman outside of it.

Nah, that's a ****ing megasaurus example of how to live in my book. :hand

Seriously though, somebody earlier called him an anti-hero, and that isn't too far off the mark I reckon.
