George was just shy of 49 when he beat Briggs. Judges really messed that one up. Foreman won for sure. George showed that one should believe in themselves and not other people's limits. Ring wear can mess boxers up as they go on (the constant beatings). Age should not be a factor but ring wear, desire, rustiness, etc. Holyfield has had many wars. It's whatever he wants to do.
Holyfield was 47 when he should have been crowned a 5 time world champ when he beat Valueav. Talk about the judges screwing up.
I am facebook friends with Riddick Bowe (and it really is him.not some guy running it for him....) and Bowe has said he would like to fight Holyfield again....
Forgive me if I don't get all misty-eyed. He was a dirty, dirty fighter, a blatant drug cheat and always had some shitty excuse for his uneven performances. He gave us some exciting performances, I'll give him that. And I wish he had conserved his earnings.
I will move him down on my ATG list for quitting like this. It's bad enough when they quit in the ring, on their stools, but to quit when they're not even in the middle of a fight is pure bollocks. He's no longer even in my top twenty heavies, now. This is the most ridiculous thing since Tunney quit out of the ring.
He'll always have people to help him out...he's Holyfield...a figure of great respect and oneHe simply didn't have the sense to get that will always have a sympathrtic, helping hand to come to his aid. He simply didn't have the sense to invest his money wisely and get out of the game at his best, or near his best. Like so many boxers. You can count the smart ones on one hand...those who quit at the top, or near the top.
True warrior. Unbelievable heart, and an elite skillset and iron chin. Never ducked anyone, always been a class act. Wins over George Foreman, Riddick Bowe and Mike Tyson, nuff said. "Real Deal" baby, they dont make em like that anymore. I wish him the best.
I think he is going to be in real trouble in a decade or so from his head/brain trauma. He's been slurring a long time and it's much better seeing the Larry Holmes and Lennox Lewis types that retire with their health/dignity/money.
I feel really bad for the guy...the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. I wish things were different for him, because I don't think there has ever been a more courageous or fearless fighter. I think Evander (like so many) just didn't invest well enough for the future. I can't blame him...the millions were rolling in seemingly without end, and I guess for a guy who never had much, it's like being in heaven every day. It's just that Evander seemed so very unlikely to end up this way. He seemed a bit more grounded, more level-headed than most. As a youngster, I used to have his KO posters on my wall...he just never seemed destined to share the fate of so many boxers. (slurred speech included.) Isn't it strange also that it's his rival, Tyson, that is the one that has emerged in a better state. It was Mike whom we thought would end up back in jail, dead or at the very least broke and homeless. Yet, it's Tyson who has been the one to leave boxing behind and in a way, reinvent himself. I can only hope that Evander can do the same. Thanks for everything Evander...watching you over the decades has been my honour.
Damn Seamus, when I first joined ESB you sounded like a cynical, cantankerous long winded douche bag, but then you lightened up alot. That statement just brought me back
What I dont understand is if you make 200 million why cant you save 10? Just 10, thats 5%, but enough to live comfortably on for a long time. Why are these guys so stupid and none of them learn from the idiots before them that squander their fortunes? Now he is negative 15 million with a bunch of judgements against him. He might as well just jump off a building.
