A while back, I read that Holyfield said this. And if Holyfield was in the late 30's, early 40s, I could definitely see a Holyfield/Louis rivalry. Frankly, out of a trilogy, I'd expect that Holyfield would beat, perhaps even stop Louis at least once. He surely would have been a worthy rival to Louis.

So how does this go? Does Holyfield indeed "tear Louis up" or does he get torn up?

    Holyfield's quotes about Louis:
"Jesse Owens couldn't even make the Olympic team today. It's the same with boxing. I always just look at Joe Louis, I say, You know what, he kind of slow. I'd tear him up."

"People say, Joe Louis had twenty-five consecutive wins as a champion. That's because they didn't have videotape. You couldn't pick up his style unless you was in there with him."

I love Holyfield, but he tended to like a tear up.
I don’t think it would be a good idea to have one with Joe Louis.

Holyfield was doing an interview once and the interviewer asked if he could compete with the great heavyweights of the past. He said something like he could beat any that came before him because he knew everything they knew plus some new things they didn't know. Most athletes believe the same. I've heard young boxers giggle and laugh when they watch old Youtube videos of past fighters. Athletes in all sports have improved and there are no "lost secrets" or anything else that would make boxers of the past better than boxers of the present.

Fighters say a lot of false ****. Didn't Schmeling find a weakness in Louis from watching tape? I don't exactly get how old school fighters not having tape would make a modern fighter who does have tape any better. I mean, put them in the 1930s and 1940s with no film to study of the opponent and they will have way more trouble.

I`ve film studies on Joe Louis and other greats and the boxers today don`t even use these moves, Holyfield weren`t no Floyd Mayweather when it came to being a student of the game, just listen on youtube when Floyd says the two guys that would have gave him the most problems were Duran and Pernell Whitaker, Duran was picked by experts as the best in-fighter of the last 30 years at some point, Whitaker who improved Judah after he started training him has all but given up on training because modern fighters don`t listen another trainer Barry Robinson showed tapes of Foreman using tricks vs Lyle and young heavyweights look at him as if he`s mad, they all want to just KO everyone like Tyson not realising Mike studied old fighters like Dempsey and Paterson to learn and grow as a boxer, Mayweather uses the pull counter which Ali used often there`s modern fighters that do that move better than the super quick Ali. One thing that might have been too much for Louis would have been Holy`s size advantage, if they fought at the same weight I`d pick Louis because of his better defense and hand speed but Holy had the better chin.

Jesse Owens using modern technology is less than a stride behind Bolt as the second fastest man ever, according to David Epstein.

Evander seems to spot the same stylistic opportunities in fighting Louis as the guys during Louis' era did.
Speed doesn't matter so much if, for example, Louis can take Evanders power, but Evander can't take his.

I'm going to state with confidence that Joe Louis would make the U.S. Olympic Boxing team.

The existence of Gennady Golovkin helps make sense of Joe Louis's success.

0:51-2:57 Argues that Owens on the same surface with Bolt probably would have been within a stride of the later sprinter.

Because Holyfield is known for being a humble athlete with a high opinion of other fighters.
