I know, Holyfield wins this and it isn't even debatable. But, that's not why I started this thread. My question is, how good of a fight would Gerry give Holy? Let's say we take Gerry Cooney around 1981 before he took 13 months off prior to the Holmes fight, and Evander from maybe 1990, right around the Douglas win. Cooney would have been about 24, while Holy would be 28. both were around 25-0 record wise. Holyfield had the tendency to get a bit too heroic for his own good and slug with the big boys. Could this have made for a good fight with Cooney? What do you think?
The Cooney boy of '81 and '82 hangs tuff but still manages to lose in the end..... Late round TKO or Decision loss............ Post '85 Cooney gets smoked by Holy within 5 to 8 rds......... 1990 to 1991 Holy is just too quick and slick for Cooney........ MR.BILL
Holyfield was smart enough to box Foreman. I suspect he doesn't have as much respect for Cooney but better for his left hook. I'd see Holyfield breaking Cooney down in the mid to late stages. Holyfield could get caught. Either way he's getting up and fighting on to win in a battle. Cooney's best chance is to put him away early.
"Evander Holyfield vs Gerry Cooney ( how competitive would Gerry be? )" Answer: Not very. Within 4 rounds.:bbb
Ultimately, Cooney would be outclassed, but i'm not sure if Holyfield can or will box the safe fight that Holmes did. A Cooperesque moment before the 4th isn't out of the question, but i think Holyfield hangs in there and rallies to stop his opponent before the 11th.
This is sort of the outcome that I was thinking of. Holyfield slugged it out for 10 rounds with dynamite Dokes, was decked by Bert Cooper and stunned by both George Foreman and Alex Stewart. Its not unreasonable to think that a prime Gerry Cooney with a huge size advantage and aggressive punching style couldn't have given him similar problems.
I agree the average Holy KO's the Cooney we all came used to. But, howsabout, the Moorer bout Holy versus the pre-Holmes Cooney who was KO'ing everyone put in his way?
Who says it isn't debatable? They never fought...so it is in the air. Frankly, Cooney presents a BIG threat, especially early. Holy would have to fight smart, especially early. I pick Holyfield, but simply dismissing Cooney is all wrong.
