Here is another instant classic between two warriors not afraid to mix it up. If Holyfield simply sticks to his boxing and countering Dempsey, he wins a 12 round decision however that is a big IF. Would Evander be able to resist trading with such a tough aggressive fighter who was smaller than him I doubt it the Real Deal would have a point to prove and want to show off his gigantic heart. Comparing the two fighters shows that Evander is 1.5 inches taller with 4.5 inches in reach and about 20lbs in weight this would encourage Holyfield to go to war not the best of strategies but the fans wouldn’t be complaining. Dempsey was clearly the harder hitter and faster of the two where Evander has the edge is the much better boxing skills, size and ring IQ. A real toss up of a fight that could be ended at any point if Jack lands flush and catches Holyfield off guard. As predicted the first round is Dempsey coming out and looking for a brutal quick finish. Holyfield will be prepared and uses his skills and size to avoid the most damaging of punches and frustrate Jack. After a few rounds Evander is up on all the judges and is feeling pretty confident, he starts letting his hands go a bit too much and stays on the inside for a little too long. Dempsey sees the opportunity and really starts to turn up the heat landing some vicious punches hurting Holyfield and dropping him in round 6. With Evander’s great chin he gets up and rides out the storm. As the Real Deal settles back into his boxing he starts to land some beautiful combinations that stun his opponent, with the Manassa Mauler now realizing he needs a knockout the championship rounds consist of him wildly chasing down Holyfield and looking to finish him off. With Evander’s superior skills he has already made the adjustments necessary to avoid the clinch and fighting on the inside making Dempsey less dangerous and unable to find the knockout. Verdict – Decision win to Holyfield
My impression is Dempsey would knock him out - I’m going to say it before the usual donkeys do “LOL DeMpSEY WoUlD DrAw the ColOuR LiNE HaR hAR” bite me.
He’s definitely got the firepower but Evander's got a great chin and much better boxing skills, would be one hell of a fight
Dempsey was a brawler a very effective one but still a brawler, when against a better skilled fighter like Tunney he was outclassed. I would put Holys skills on par with Gene if not greater, Olympic Bronze medalist (a robbery) 4 time world champion, in the second Bowe fight Evander displayed great skills by moving and not engaging in an all out war, don’t forget how he outboxed Tyson, Foreman and held his own against a prime Lewis Evander’s skills were on another level to Jack’s
That doesn’t answer my question, id also be very surprised if everybody here didn’t know his most commonly talked about opponents or seen those fights multiple times. I have a new question anyway - as a boxer how is Evander similar or even on par with Gene?
The point I was making is if Gene can outbox Dempsey so could Evander I think this is the first time someone has said Dempsey was more skilled than Holyfield, the same Holyfield who outboxed some ATG fighters, he also possesses one of the best resumes in Heavyweight history and was undisputed champion at Cruiserweight and Unified Heavyweight Champion Do you genuinely think Jack Dempsey was more skilled than Evander Holyfield?
Dempsey's punching power and speed would make the difference in this one. I'd be surprised if the fight got to the middle rounds.
Dempsey was washed and hadn't fought in 3 years when he faced Tunney. Tunney himself said Dempsey would've killed him in his prime. How exactly are Holyfield's skills 'on par' with Tunney?
I agree no doubt Holyfield was skilled but in his later career he relied on PEDs and headbutting way too much. A prime Dempsey smokes him.
The main argument was Dempsey was more skilled than Holyfield which I completely disagree with as I’m sure most people would
Oh God, Holyfield dusts him. Vander sends three punches for every one Jack tries, and completely outmuscles him in the trenches. This has its moments but is over before the 6th round.
