I think the Ellis who fought Ali will beat Evander in a tough fight but any other version gets stopped late. Thoughts?
Great chess match with lots of good action to boot. Ellis wears from the pace, and Evander wins a by late stoppage or UD. Holyfield wins with a late surge.
A very good scrap, Jimmy Ellis would keep himself in this match against Evander Holyfield, with his snappy left jab and ring experience. But Evander's combination punching and the fact that Ellis could not hurt him would result in a stoppage in round 12 in favor of Holyfield.
A lot of good heavies have a chance with Evander. But he could beat guys that they wouldn't stand a chance with. Taking Ellis as an example, I think Evander might have had Ali's number in the 70s just like Norton did. He may have beaten the Frazier that beat Ellis. I couldn't see Jimmy coping with the size and arsenal of Bowe or Lewis like Holy did. But I could see Jimmy winning at least once in three fights with Evander. Jimmy could be overwhelmed, Evander couldn't or wouldn't. But nor did he overwhelm, at least not at heavyweight against good opponents. Jimmy could have coped with Holy much better than he could the likes of Frazier or Shavers. It's part of the enduring legend of Holyfield. On his day, he could hang with absolutely anyone in history. Off it, it could be surprising how far down the list of ATG heavies you could go whom you'd give a decent chance against him.
This is getting out of hand ....Evander Holyfield is a 4 time heavyweight champion...and people on this forum are picking Jimmy Ellis and Tommy Morrison to beat him ?
Holyfield was roided to the gills, thus I call him Roydifield. Or Roidyfield, this seems more appropiate.
Tommy Morrison is exactly the type of fighter that Holyfield would look like a million dollars against
