Jimmy Ellis had a lot of grit. He fought tough against Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali for as long as it lasted and beat excellent contenders in Bonavena, Chuvalo, Quarry and Martin. He was slick and crafty at times too. He could give Evander fits. But at the end of the day I see Holyfield’s relentless attacks and precision punching winning the day by a late stoppage. Very good fight though
No, they weren't. At least certainly not to the extent Holyfield was on. His body transformation is the clear proof.
Holyfield fighting in Ellis's era loses to Jimmy by UD, if Jimmy was roided up as much as Holyfield he beats Evander in his era too.
I think it would be an entertaining fight while it lasted ,but I'd expect Evander to gradually wear Ellis down for a mid to late rounds stoppage.
Of course they were, people just pick on Holyfield because it was way more obvious, but what makes you think other fighters weren’t juiced up, the testing was completely sh*t back then and was very easy to get away with, Tyson even said in his book he would just fill up a whizzer with someone else’s **** to pass test. You have made it clear many times on this forum your just anti Holyfield
Holyfield beats him without to much trouble and I'm honesty surprised Ellis is getting this much support.
I hate him cause he was a roided cheat and I think he is way too overrated, but he's still top 10 all time. The bottom part of the top, but top nonetheless. Ellis is no ATG.
That’s great dude, good luck finding someone on this forum who doesn’t know he was juicing, but you don’t have to keep going on threads about him just to call him a cheat and make bias arguments
This is one of those 'what's wrong with Evander nights'. Holyfield is not gonna have the quickness and coordination advantages he enjoyed against those larger heavyweights. Jimmy Ellis gonna be sticking that crisp jab in Evander face and shooting the right hand down the middle. Holyfield has his moments, wins some rounds but doesn't sustain his offense. Ellis takes it on ring generalship, Ring IQ, and flash knockdown courtesy of that quick right. All those rounds sparring with Ali would serve Jimmy well. After the fight Ellis tells Larry Merchant how easy it was.
Holy wipe out. Ellis might be fancy enough to stick around for 5 or 6 rounds. The end would be a great showcase of Holy's vicious, darting style.
Ellis was too small and didn't hit hard enough to win. Holyfield via later round TKO or points. Ellis to make a good showing while it lasts. Holyfield has issues with some smaller heavies, such as Moorer whom he went 1-1 with. He did not look good at all vs. Vaughn Bean either, and of course James Toney, well...
People do seem to be a bit more fair than I would be toward Ellis. But hey, Ellis did have a very good jab and a no-joke right hand. He reminds me a bit of Pinklon Thomas in those regards, though Pinkie had a significantly stronger punch and much, much better chin overall. For that reason I just can't see Jimmy lasting for long, though I do see prime Thomas making the distance against Holy (probably losing, too). Evander was in his own way the ultimate fighting machine when he broke into the heavyweights imo. I still believe he would have taken prime Iron Mike at the time (as amazing as Mike indubitably was).
