I'm a fan of both, but prime Holmes has too much movement and far too good of a jab, handspeed and overall ring generalship for Holy. I'd guess Holy'd have some good moments, but I'm going for Larry in a fight maybe similar to the Norton match.
Actually prime for prime Holyfields handspeed is much better than Holmes...... .....the key for Holmes would be to persistently jab, which is a past it Holmes tried to implement on Holyfield. Holyfield beat that tactic through patience and workrate on the inside. If you're honest about it, the tactic Holmes used vs Holyfield was to rest on the ropes and hope that Holyfield fell for the trap and wore himself out trying to take him out while being in the defensive shell that he was. A prime Holmes does'nt play the rope a dope tactic that he did........ .......with a prime Holmes being more active, that opens up the avenues for the counterpunching Holyfield to be at his best in...... It defenitely a touch one to call. I think either fighter prime for prime could take it by close decision.......but it just may be that a Holyfield may have had an easier time against a prime Holmes than he did against an aged Holmes doing rope a dope in a defensive shell. .....and Btw, the Holyfield-Holmes fight was'nt even close. Holmes won a maximum of 3 rounds and vomited at the end of the fight right at center ring from the punishment to the body that was bestowed upon him by Holyfield.
I don't know what you watched to think that prime vs prime, Holyfield had much faster hands than Holmes. Prime Holmes is one of the top 5 fastest heavyweights of all time.
Holmes jab was quick, but Holyfield's combination handspeed was by far superior. .......its that combination handspeed by Holyfield that makes him the more versatile fighter. He had more avenues of attack and defense, and was more athletic imo than Holmes. Check out Holyfield's handspeed vs a jabber....... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KevxBvwF_-Q[/ame] Holyfield was often times outjabbing the jabber with the longer reach in his fights with Douglas and Bowe. Its his versatility and ability to attack at angles that allowed him to do that.
Can it be said here that in reality, prime Holmes is damn near THE top of the list of greatest heavy champs ? I loved Holyfield in his day, but Larry too much everything for him. Great lateral movement, best jab heavy`s have ever seen, superb ring generalship, and Holy is too hittable for a sharp-shooetr like Holmes...
