Tyson was a skilled fighter undder Rooney, I can`t understand why people can`t see the move he used during his first title reign, his offensive skills were superior to any other heavyweight in history.

That`s true, but he bit Holy after getting cut by a butt and getting into a panic.

Holy was dirty in more ways than one. Headbutts, PED's, and low blows.

As this video shows, he used his head to set up combinations, even using a headbutt / low blow combo agains Dokes.

If you go way back, Holy was DQ'd for biting a man in the amateurs, and was Dq'd in the Olympics ( Likley wrongly so ) for hitting on the break, which he did often.

While I do agree Holyfield did use head butts, (and elbows) much more than normal, too many times to be accidental, Ortiz's head butt was flagrantly obvious. He actually jumped with his head into Mayweather Jr.
Strange though, Holyfield didn't use his head as a weapon prior to moving to Heavyweight. At least, not that I remember.

    No, he just stopped retreating.

Is it your position that the rules of boxing dictate that if the other guy comes forward you have to keep moving backward to avoid his head?

What Evander is doing is absolutely fundamental in professional boxing. Boxers are, or should be, taught that in close quarters you do NOT want your face/nose/eyebrows facing toward where a clash of heads can happen.

Why? Because getting your nose or chin in line with two heads clashing can result in damage much worse than a punch. You want the harder/thicker part of your skull/head to absorb any collision. And your eyebrow areas are much more vulnerable to cuts (from punches, head butts, any contact of any sort) because of the bone structure — basically an edge under a thin tissue of skin.

I was taught this in a gym so long ago I can’t remember when it was and I never even fought pro. Some amateurs, you will notice, get in bad habits of fighting like that headgear will always be there and when it’s bone on bone it’s causes damage because there’s no cushion.

Tyson apparently didn’t learn or heed this message.

Mike Tyson’s offense was come forward and force the opponent into pulling back into the ‘sweet spot,’ the danger zone where the punch is most effective ... the tail-end of the punch which carries the most force. Evander wisely decided to duck inside the arc of the punch. If Tyson’s momentum makes it so that he propels itself into a butt situation and doesn’t duck his head, that’s not on Evander. Tyson comes forward with his head, which is what causes the butt. It’s not Evander’s job to have his head where Tyson wants it to be.

The fact that you interject clips of a fighter intentionally raring his head back and thrusting it forward into the most blatant, obvious, INTENTIONAL butt ever with your footage is intellectually dishonest. It’s like showing a gun accidentally go off and then showing footage of a mobster putting a gun to someone’s temple and squeezing the trigger to execute a hit.

I generally like you, Mark, and appreciate your contributions, but that’s absolutely bush league and proves you don’t believe your own point if you try to illustrate it that way. In short, you’re full of baloney and you know it.

Look this up, because it’s been true as long as there have been sports — team sports, individual sports, amateur sports, professional sports or backyard sports:

    Winners adjust; losers make excuses.

Tyson did not adjust. He could have thrown straight punches. He could have worked angles instead of coming straight in with his head thrusting forward. He could have kept the crown of his head forward instead of his face and eyebrows. He could have done a lot of things. But he didn’t, and he lost.

Holy didn`t have to use his head at cruise nobody was near his level at that weight, the heavyweight division was far better than cruiser back in the 80`s, plus he wasn`t facing bigger stronger guys that could punch like Tyson.

I was about to write something very similar. But you beat me to the punch.
It's right on point sir. My thoughts exactly on the fundamentals.
