when hitting the pads. Like my instructor tells the class left, right, dodge, come back with a right hook left hook and finish with something like an uppercut. I always mess up and forget it. after doing it a few times. Since I'm a southpaw I also have to reverse it in my head which also isnt helping.

    Any tips?

Personally i get really confused when people say the combos but if they just put the pads out im fine.

My old coach used to just use numbers.

    I taught it helped.

hahaha bro dont worry it's not just you! i have a hard time following combinations too ( maybe cause im slow in the head :p ) but after loads and loads of repeated practise i get better and better at it. just keep on practising and stay relaxed. don't pressure yourself too much into getting it correct cause it only makes you more tense and increases your chances of making a mistake!

Go over the routine thoroughly in shadowboxing until it becomes ingrained in your muscle-memory, until you can do it in your sleep.

    1-2, slip, 3

    1-2-, slip 3

    1-2, slip 3

    1-2, slip 3

    1-2, slip 3

It needs to be something that you do instinctively

Don't worry EVERYONE has gone through the scenario of your trainer putting up the pad for a hook and you try to throw a jab, mumbling an apology while he shouts and urges you to start again

What combos he wants you to throw are secondary to you throwing what you're good at. Trust that.

Once you get to the point where you're good and he's working one-on-one with you, the combos will become second nature.

The point of these combos right now isn't for you to remember them, but simply to ingrain the habit that punching is better than not punching and that it's always your turn in boxing.

There will come a time when you no longer have to tell yourself "Jab, slip right if he jabs back, right hand, then a hook if it lands." You'll just see "Opening!" and bang out the combo on a mother****er's face without even thinking.
