Here's why: Say the big bad fight happens in September 2016. GGG stops Canelo. GGG gains Canelo fans. GGG becomes the man. Then what?? 160 is DEAD DEAD DEAD. Saunders aint no draw. Neither is Jacobs, as evidenced by his latest ratings vs Quillin. Assuming GGG beats Canelo in Sept, he would move up to 168. At 168, assuming he could even get the haymon fighters such as Degale, Dirrel and Jack to fight on HBO, would these be PPV fights? NO WAY. Perhaps he could get big crowds in UK for Degale and Germany for Abraham. But thats it. 168 has no american fighters with draw. Assuming GGG gets the Canelo fight in Sept, that would be his biggest hurrah. Unfortunately for Golovkin, there are no Pacquiaos, Mosleys, Oscar Dela Hoyas, Cottos for him to fight. Just some real bad timing for GGG's part. Golovkin will be a boxer for us hardcore boxing fans to talk about. Peaceeee
I think the same thing. Even if GGG beats Canelo the casual fan will only look back at the fight as...."remember when that Chinese guy beat Canelo, what was his name again?"
Exactly my point. I'm sure the mexican contingent would support GGG PPV buys, but from what it appears the african american boxing base is outright hostile to GGG.
I agree, it'll probably push him up to 225k buys, that's all. Why are they pushing so hard for a PPV star? To hell with PPV. Golovkin has a boring career although he's a joy to watch. Thankfully Peter Quillin lost, he was not a true champion. Saunders is scared of him, he admited it. Jacobs doesn't want to get Pirog'd again which is what would definitely happen again. If belt-holders aren't willing to fight the best, they should be immediately stripped of their title. It's a boring Hagler-esque career with no real names. At least boxing forums are not that dumb, and they realise GGG would hammer the underwhelming Canelo.
I disagree. ...people pay to see you get beat when your undefeated. ....20ko streak...and hailed to be the next best thing. ...
Outright hostile fans will buy PPV. Most of Floyd's PPV buys were by people who wanted him to finally lose. PPV needs to die though.
A perfect example is Bernard Hopkins. The man was the first to beat Felix Trinidad, a HUGE star. PPV buys in that fight were 450k. After that, Hopkins STOPPED Oscar for the first time in Oscar's career. After the Dela Hoya fight, Hopkins fought Jermain Taylor on PPV for 350k PPV buys. Hopkins vs Calzaghe on Regular HBO Hopkins vs Pavlik did less than 200k PPV Hopkins vs Pascal 1 and 2 were on regular HBO Hopkins vs Kovalev on regular HBO If Hopkins, with an absolutely amazing resume could not break out to become a PPV star, no way GGG does so.
To be honest, I don't really care. If GGG ends up fighting the best Middleweights and the fights are even a little profitable, I'll be happy. I'm not concerned with the next mans pockets - all I want to see is the best fights. Will GGG become a crossover star? Very unlikely due to his age - he's more likely to be a hardcore favourite and that's fine by me.
Conor McGregor is PPV worthy. Floyd Mayweather isn't even PPV worthy after the Pacquiao farce happened. 400k PPV buys vs Berto.
Oh I'm right there with you. K2 and HBO believe, or at least believed that they could push GGG as a PPV star. The Lemiuex fight was the eye opener. I'm curious to know how well a Jacobs vs Golovkin PPV would do. I'm guessing at least 250k.
A big PVP audience needs two big named fighters to generate the numbers. Look at Pac/Mayweather numbers... even with Pac being "over the hill". Now, without the drawing power, no one wants to pay $50.00 plus to watch some "B" level fighter getting beat.
That sounds about right. Not everyone has to be a PPV draw; we can just have really good fighters involved in great, relevant fights without worrying about them smashing records.
*****s have taken it upon them to compare every fighter's draw to floyds. The problem is that Floyd was fortunate to fight in a time AND division when there were loads of POPULAR talent for him to fight. Of course, he did the good work of beating all those popular AND talented guys. GGG simply came at a time where 160 had no names. Even a decade earlier with Jermain Taylor, Pavlik, Chavez Jr and Martinez would have given Golovkin much bigger draw today. Instead he's had to feast on Monroe, Murray, Lemiuex, Rubio, Stevens, Geale. Lets not forget Sturm didnt do him any favors by avoiding the fight.
