Sure, Pavlik is somewhat of a specialist and generally doesn't have much need for adjusting, but I still think he could pick up a thing or two. He'll be fighting an experienced awkward southpaw that has a tendency to adjust, one that will rarely do the same thing twice coming in. I wouldn't take this bout if I were him, but whatever happens, I hope he comes out of it stronger.
It must be difficult to give it everything and know there is someone out there just better... I couldnt see it affecting Pavlik that way though
DOESN'T HAVE MUCH NEED FOR ADJUSTING? :yikes But the title is the truth... even if he loses this one, it will be a GREAT learning experience. Also if the fight goes the way I think will go, it will reveal a lot of flaws most people don't even think about: he's unable to fight backwards, having troubles if forced to fight the opponent's fight/pace, serious problems with defense so he's FORCED to go forward, open to quick counter-punches especially from unusual angles, seemingly unable to defend himself when hurt, no great defensive techniques in muscle memory, adaptability is a big Q etc. But he's young so he's got time on his side - and he's pretty damn good already.
It's very difficult to quantify Pavlik's skills especially defensivley - you'll never see him bob or weave like Whitaker but he always has his gloves high and has become quite good at picking off shots with his gloves. The thing that would give gim trouble all night with Joe C is his lack of lateral movement.
Not much to learn in a loss to Joe C.. He doesn't bring any different looks as a fighter, he brings a solid chin, rediculous workrate, is a very good swarmer and will throw punches now and then too. Pavlik has the skillset to beat him, he just needs to use them right.. Really lay into the right cross, and not fall into the same patterns all night long. He needs to change it up with his power punches.. Catch joe on the outside with that cross, and beat him on the inside by mixing it up. *note* Reason I say not much to learn in a loss to Joe C.. Look at fighters who have already lost to him. He just sucks confidence out of fighters, really all there is to him is staying sharp on a gamplan with contingencies, and keeping up with his work rate. Seems simple, but it's really one of the toughest things to ask of a boxer.
