Plenty. Tyson and even guys like Duran, Tito Trinidad, and Chavez who's popularity was insane. More impressive these guys never master or spoke English but had strong followings in their home country and in the states.

 

Hatton got all the GLOBAL PPv & TV rites $$$$$ all down the thick & dumb "Planet America" mentality of GBP who **** out big time. They could'nt believe they eyes when 40,000+ turned up in Vegas & drank the place dry & spent a fortune & GBP got **** all from it. Even the memorabilia & programme publishers blew the chance to make millions.

The dick that printed the programmes was weeping blood as he only printed 8,000 of them when he could have shifted 100,000+ if he'd pulled his head out of his arse. The average purchase of souvenier programmes was 8 per person & they'd all gone before the hoards arrived. DLH was on the next plane out after the fight to sign Hatton up & was suprised that Boxing was popular outside planet america

It got a lot of hype in the UK, I think did around 1mil buys in £ and another 1mil buys in US. Not sure if it was PPV in other countries though, in that sense how do you measure its success?


As for this thread, not that I know of. People saying Hatton, its not even close. Maybe about 1/10th in terms of popularity in their homeland.

Pacquiao has a homecoming rally everytime he wins where god knows how many people are in the streets cheering him on and police controlling the streets.

A guy who has had a movie made about him in the philippines. Has starred in movies. Has had albums that went platinum (all this whilst unable to sing or act). Is now a congressman and probably going for a higher position in the future. Crime drops to 0 when he fights allegedly and rebels hold ceasefire.

I live in England and its not even close. The only time you hear of Hatton here is in news when he has a fight coming up, and many will not even know who he is, ie teenage girls who has 0 interest in boxing. Pacquiao would be known by great grandparents living in some obscure province and 5 years olds who dont even have radio or TV. On top of that Pac is literally on TV every 5min, whether its an advert or some news or some other media outlet hes in. As well as having his face plastered on many billboards, papers, magazines, adverts and every other memorabilia.

Pacquiao is the greatest sportsman the Philippines has ever had, so to make any form of comparison you would have to compare it to a country's most popular sportsman ever, not just fighter. Even then it probably still wouldn't compare, probably because countries like the Philippines has had less International sporting heroes therefore when they get one, its a lot more attention.
