Example: Ray Mercer vs Tommy Morrison.

It irks me how brutal that KO was and Mercer showed no signs of stopping. Could have killed Tommy. I think he should have shown restraint. He had to know it was over. Not going for the “ref hadn’t pulled me off” crap.

The idea of boxing is to hurt and knock down the opponent

I think the tef could have been in quicker. Where Mercer is concerned it's difficult, he didn't do anything wrong but at the same time if had stepped back a punch or 2 earlier Tommy would still have been done. You have to remember though the adrenaline pumping during a fight when you have your opponent in that position isn't an easy thing to overule for want of a better word.

The opposite is true of Vitali against Shannon Briggs he was literally gesturing to the referee to call it, that was a beat down

I don’t really question their morality but there have been exceptions where fighters like Norton held off on a clearly injured and no longer viable opponent (see Randy Stephens fight).

After the fight, Norton said he knew his job was done and that he wasn’t out to unnecessarily hurt or maim his opponent.

However, when his turn came as the guy on the receiving end, Ken Norton was nearly killed by Cooney: -

On the other hand, if Usyk had been a little more 'Mercer' against Fury in Round 9, he could've finished the job. Could've got that critical final blow in before ref stepped in if he had that bit more animal in him.

Not really. In instances like you're discussing, I tend to chalk things up to being in kill mode and unable to pump the brakes and go into civilian mode the way they would if they were...well, if they were, in fact, able. They sometimes aren't. It's why you need referees. It's why you can't just explain the rules to the combatants and let them police themselves. People in nonviolent mindsets are bad at policing themselves and incredibly bad at policing themselves morally when they're not doing anything that violates a rule they have to pay for. But add that to a violent competition context and the brain shorts out at times in unbelievably poor shows to anyone watching. And in pretty decent people-allegedly.
