Manny did help Wlad with those things, V, but he still goes straight back, instead of sliding off and circling the way Vitali does, making it look easy. Wlad's a consummate technician with a trip-hammer jab 'n straight-as-string wrecking-ball right. But, if a fighter can endure the punishment, he can chase Vlad straight back 'n do what Lamon Brewster did in their first match.
Didn't mean literally a killing shot, A, just a defensive flaw that's gone unfixed, that allows Wlad to be hit with big shots.
Learned his lesson after the De Jesus fights. Crazy he was dropped the same way in two fights in the first round.
Louis corrected that in the return with Schmeling. Tucked his chin behind his left shoulder 'n double 'n triple-jabbed his way in, crowding Max.
Wlad always went backwards and he still does but he had no answer if he couldn't move backwards or was hurt so in some way he fixed his flaw with clinching
Was going to specifically to mention this. Interesting to see Marciano moved in similar ways to Louis. The way he kind of skipped forward when advancing, the probing left hand before letting off powerful shots in range. Part of me thinks he learned it by watching the BB, but part of me thinks it was more of a standard back at that time to fight in a more angled stance (what they call old-school nowadays).
He didn't fix anything. He just cheats and fights like a coward. The holding he does is not legal. But he has to fight that way because he can't take a punch. Notice cotton and Nady are never the Ref for WLads fights?? The reason there not is because they will take points from Wlad and maybe even DQ him for all the holding and grabbing.
Wlad is a good shout. He has improved in many ways, but defensively his footwork is much improved, and his control of distance now is really exceptional (might take a retirement and a few years before people really start giving him credit). In terms of other aspects, he now paces himself better, so his defense doesn't deteriorate later in the fight. His punch choice is much more conservative, but also more effective - rarely leaving himself open at all. Because of Wlad's underrated hand speed, and well acknowledged power, and much improved defense his opponents punch output is ends up being reduced - the risks that his opponents need to take in order to breach that defense are much higher than they are used to. So many of Wlad's opponents have a much lower punch output when they face him, compared to their previous opponents. That wouldn't have been the case if he hand't made those adjustments with Steward.
