I remember when I was first starting out, I was in with Harry and he was working on his defense. I got him backed into a corner and hit him with a clean four punch combo. He dropped his gloves, looked at me, said those were some nice shots, and then he railed me. The first and only time I ever saw stars in the ring. The man hit like a sledge hammer.
Thanks, j...Brings back memories. Seen that scenario with good pros played out a lot over the years. James Toney wasn't adverse to laying out rank amateurs if he thought they were tryin' to get cute.
Harry taught me a lot in the ring. Great Guy! I credit him and some other pros we had in our stable for my amatuer success. Our stable consisted of Greg "The Flea" Richardson, Harry, Jeff Lampkin, and Roland Cummings (Who had one helluva of fight with Oba Carr). I remember seeing championship belts all over the place.
Sounds like a terrific atmosphere, j. Rare to have so many quality fighters in one gym. You must've seen some wars! No wonder Youngstown produces so many top-tier guys. In my day (when dinosaurs roamed the earth), it was Tony Janiro.
Tony "Blacky" Janiro- That's a blast from the past. How about this resume. W This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
Hector, Donald and kelcie were all southpaws, so I learned alot about fighting southpaws (lead with the right hand, etc), but more importantly, I learned how to actually fight southpaw!:good
RJ was quick. Back then they called him "Little Roy" or "Sugar Roy". I knew his rep but he was about 3 years younger than I was so I thought maturity would prevail. He NEVER jabbed but seemed to always lead with a left hook. We exchanged left hooks in the first round and I caught him flush. I thought he was hurt so I went after him to finish. He went to the ropes, I threw about what seemed like 40 shots to take him out...and missed them all. He started to come on and the bell rang. I was gassed after that but did manage to stay two more rounds and lose a decision.
To mix-it-up with Roy like that -- on even terms -- k, you mustta been a helluva boxer. Ever still get the itch?
I went into kickboxing and dominated because of my superior balance and punching (Something many kickboxers lack). This is my first World Championship Kickboxing match way back in 94. I was scared to death! This content is protected I also was on the premiere episode of the Toughman World Championship series where I got jobbed in the finals. But all in all, it was fun as hell :happy I still get the itch. I still hit the bag and spar on occasion.
You're gonna be some hero to your gran' kids, k; they'll trot-you-out like a thoroubred to all the kids in the neighborhood. By the time they finish tellin' it, you'll have KO'd Jones in the first round.
My skills certainly weren't shabby when I was younger, but they weren't world class. My power and wet-cement head were what put me up there. And it showed. When I met a weaker foe, I crushed him, at one point was number 9 on Sugar Ray Leonards top amatuer punchers in the world. I struggled mightily with the lower top 30 amatuers in America, winning and losing some, and got mopped by that tope echelon worldwide cause I just couldn't hit em. After two unsuccesful journey's to the Olympic Trials sandwhiching a moderately successful foray to Canada ending with a violent asskicking, I quit. Time seemed right. But, I ended up training and practicing with the U.S. Olympic Team on several occasions. I made a lot of friends in the business this way. I'm quite skilled today. As my power, speed, and body have eroded under age, I've had to compensate. I've sparred to simulate Michael Moorer and Sultan Ibragimov on many occasions. Little known fact that anybody around Olympic boxing in the 90's might know: Tarver almost stayed in Florida because he was having issue's with a girlfriend. We were all VERY pissed off. Yeah. That's my life in boxing. I'm probably going to make a geriatric pro debut within a year, just to say I did it.
