My friend, fire will never go out. Athletically, boxing is all I've ever known. I've been doing it since I was old enough to get on a train alone, which in my day, was about 5 or 6, haha. My father invested all his free time and spare cash into making me what I am now, and always said that his boy "punched like that boy Tyson, and he'll knock that boy out and that Hollyfield fella, and he'll be champ!". I'm gonna do it to see if I can take a punch without headgear on.
I've only heard about Mundine (maybe seen a short clip ). Remember his dad (incredible physical specimen -- looked like the actor Woody Strode) when he was either flattening everyone or bein' starched himself. All the OZ fighters and trainers I've spoken with about Mundine point to the same thing you have, his speed. Find it amazing -- even spending so much time around his dad in the gym as a kid -- that he could've absorbed enough about boxing to come off the football pitch at an advanced age and accomplish what he has. Hope before he hangs'em up, I get to see him box live. Was on the ring apron when Danny Green sparred James Toney. Green's some gutsey kid -- very personable: a jokester/surfer. Took body shots from James that wouldda crumpled heavyweights, but he never backed off an inch and kept thrownin'. Took the whole thing as a lark, which really pissed James off.
Hope before he hangs'em up, I get to see him box live. I can not speak highly enough of Danny Green............great guy After we sparred he said to follow him back to his house which we did and gave me and my gym partner a hole heap of boxing gear including gloves and head gear..... One can only hope that Mundine will take the step up onto the global stage...............time shall tell
I did the same thing. I chewed gum until it was as hard as a rock. For neck strength we would have our legs drapped over the top turnbuckle doing a handstand without using your hands. My neck to this day still cracks.
Jus' thought of another Ytown undersung great, Tommy Bell. His record doesn't begin to describe how good he was. I saw him in the old Madison Square Garden in '46 against Sugar Ray Robinson for the vacant welter title. Gave Sugar all he could handle -- knocked him down. 'lotta people thought Tommy won that night (I was partial to Sugar; he gave me boxing tips in the gym)
My trainer was Earl "Burl" Charity. He fought LaMotta in 48 in the Bronx. "Bout stopped because of a bad cut over Charity's left eye, as well as a split lip. Main event of the opening card of the 1948/49 (final) season at Park Arena." BoxRec
Talk about 6 degrees of separation. I remember Charity, fought alotta beasts beside Jake. Think I saw him in the mid-'50s at Eastern Parkway.
Wow! You sparred with Bika? What was he like? I bet you could outpunch Mundine... Against whom did you do the best? And whom would you pick to win: Bika v. Mundine? Thanks, mate!:good
