imo punching power comes from the legs and the back muscles.
i thought foreman was broad but watch this video and check out the size/broadness of shavers shoulders. his lats just stick out.
you can tell he has very heavy hands plus the explosiveness-something foreman lacked imo.

shavers upperbody is similar to that of langfords.

Awesome power. Shame it was his only real attribute. If he'd possessed any other quality,he would have been as succesful as George Foreman.

Shavers quickly moved his entire bodyweight to the foot he was punching towards, pivoting on the none punching foot and swinging quickly from the hip. Maybe Archie Moore taught him, but Shavers perfected it, that and his body just being built to punch

Earnie had a great snap to his punch and strong shoulders but if you look at his fights vs Stander, Stallings,Quarry,Rondon, you can see the other side of the coin

Part of that ability thats often overlooked, is that he put punches together really well for a guy who wasnt the quickest. Punching power is a gift from GOD, using it in combination makes it far more effective.

Thats true there was an onslaught of punches sometimes, I also think his skills are better than given credit for, just that he could gass after the early onslaught and be next to no use after that

Everyone seems to talk of Earnie's big right hand but, IMO, his left hook was just as devestating tho he never seemed to use it as much.
That left bomb on Lyle was a killer; had that happened mid-round, Lyle would have rose and been KO'd.
IMHO, knowing his limitations to becoming "gassed" mid-fight, he changed his style later on, I guess we could all argue whether that was the course to take or not.
In retrospect, I've always thought his was mismanaged and could have fared much better with top-flight training.

I still don't know how the hell Ali withstood clean hits with that much power...

Punching power ain't about big lats or wide shoulders or any of that man watching ****. It's largely a mix of neurological ****, balance AND strength. Lacking any of these will seriously detract from a fighters power. On the other end, a lot can be amplified by accuracy, location and timing. It's a complicated affair.

Having arms like a pair of 50 pound clubs certainly helped him in the power department, but also partly explains why he could tire so easily. He's apparently a very huge boned man for someone who stands six feet tall. His reach was recorded at 80 inches, a freakishly long wingspan for a man of that height. Underrated hand speed was another frequently overlooked attribute.

Jowcol mentioned the hook he dropped Lyle with, and it should be remembered that his hook was also the punch which initially stunned Norton. His left was infinitely deadlier than say, Ingo's.

And how Holmes got to his feet and won the fight. That's what separates the special fighters - it's all about a refusal to yield, ambition!

Shavers didn't knockout any special fighters in my estimation, but he hurt Ali and Holmes, two of the greatest Heavyweights ever, as much as any other fighter ever did in my estimation. Both were in big trouble, close to being stopped.
